The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will be battling it out on Sunday from the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The prize on offer is Super Bowl LIV. This is what the NFL season has all built up to.

256 regular season matches have been completed. Plus the 10 from the playoffs brackets. This will be the first time that the 49ers and Chiefs have met in the Super Bowl. It is the Chiefs who are edging favouritism to come out on top.

Play-Off Campaign – Kanas City Chiefs

Kansas was the second seed form the AFC. That meant that they had a first-round bye in the playoffs. They were heavily down when they met the Houston Texans in the divisional round, trailing 24-0 at one point. But miraculously they mounted a comeback to go into the midway break 28-24.

It was all Kansas after that. They went on to score over 50 points in total. That put them through to the AFC Championship match against the Tennessee Titans, who had shocked the New England Patriots earlier in the bracket. A run of 28 straight points on the board helped Kansas produce a 35-24 win.

Play-Off Campaign – San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers with the overall first seed from the NFC. So they had a rest week in the first round of the playoffs. They entered the playoff bracket in the second round and were up against the Minnesota Vikings. San Francisco were in control of the match all the way and eased to a comfortable 27-10 victory. Their dominance never looking under threat at any point.

That moved them through to the NFC Championship game where they were up against the Green Bay Packers. A powerful first-half performance set the 49ers up for success. They romped to a 27-0 half time lead in the Championship game. While the Packers did come back at them, San Francisco walked to the Super Bowl with a 17 point margin victory.

Who is the home team?

Kansas are the home team for the fixture. That means that they are the ones who get to pick which uniform they want. They are going with their home colours. Interestingly, this will be the first Super Bowl ever between two teams whose primary jersey colours are red. The home team at a Super Bowl alternates between the AFC and NFC representatives each year.

Head to head

Back in the third week of the 2018 season, the Chiefs and 49ers met and it was a game in which the 49ers QB Jimmy Garappolo picked up an ACL tear and ended his season.

This season’s meeting, back on August 24th did go the way of the 49ers who picked up a 27-17 victory.

San Francisco have won two of the last three meetings, but in the last six overall, the head to head is split at three wins each.

Garoppolo gets his Super Bowl shot

The big reason that the San Francisco 49ers have put such a remarkable season together is because of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He only kicked off his career in 2014 when he was Tom Brady’s back up until he was traded to the 49ers in 2017.

He came in when the 49ers were 0-8 for the season, but he started to get them some momentum, guiding them to five straight wins at the end of the campaign.

But then his 2018 was ruined with the aforementioned injury against the Chiefs. So he’s really only jumped back on the wagon this season and he has started all games for the 49ers in this campaign.

The 28-year-old does have two Super Bowl Championship rings thanks to his time with the Patriots. Garoppolo completed 69.1% of his passes (4th in the NFL) and his key partnership was with George Kittle.

Super-talent Mahomes

Patrik Mahomes, a first-round draft pick by Kansas in 2017 again showed his class this season. For the 2018 season, he was the MVP for the NFL season having won 12 regular-season games and completing 50 touchdown passes. Kansas though bowed out at the AFC Championship game last season.

But Mahomes has gotten them all the way to the Super Bowl this season. The performance of the 24-year-old is crucial of course for Kansas and their chance in Sunday’s game. Can he hold himself under the biggest pressure of all?

Probably. He has gotten the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl in 50 years and he looks pretty unflappable. His key partnership for passes is with Travis Kelce. Mahomes is the even-money favourite to be the Super Bowl LIV MVP* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59)

Offence v Defence

San Francisco were excellent in the defensive department throughout the seasons. They were second in the overall NFL for fewest yards allowed and first in fewest passing yards against them. The game is going to hinge on them shutting down Mahones’ options.

Will that lead to the game being a low-scoring tight duel? The longer that the 49ers can keep it tight, the more chances they are going to have of ruffling Mahomes’ feathers. Under 52.5 points is at evens* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59).

Super Bowl History

The strike rate of the 49ers from previous Super Bowl appearances is great. They have been to six previous Super Bowl matches and have won five of them. The only upset that they have ever suffered on the big stage was on their last appearances were the Baltimore Ravens beat them by three points in 2012.

This will be just the third time that the Kansas City Chiefs have made it to the Super Bowl. Their first visited in defeat in 1966 against the Green Bay Packers. They returned in 1969 in facing the Vikings and secured the title.

The Favourites

Ahead of the Championship matches, of the four teams that were left standing, it was the Kansas City Chiefs who were the outright favourites to win this Super Bowl. So naturally with them on show in Miami, they are the favourites. But the outright winner odds are not wide apart with the Chiefs at 4/5 odds-on* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59).

Points Spread

A tight game with tight lines. A Chiefs -1.5 is running at 10/11 odds with a swing into odds-against for just a -3.5 line* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59).

The 49ers can be backed at 11/10 for a -1.5 handicap* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59).

Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers Betting Advice

It is going to all boil down to the superb defence of the 49ers and how well they can shut down the well-oiled machine that is Mahomes’ attack. That’s not going to be an easy thing of course against the reigning NFL MVP.

Interestingly, in terms of games and years in the NFL, neither quarterback is highly experienced. So where do the nerves come into play? In that regard, Garoppolo has a bit of advantage of having been in the Super Bowl arena before with the Patriots.

But the match has the look of being a good, tight one. That will suit the 49ers. So is there enough in the odds to take on the favourites? Probably.

Make no mistakes, Mahomes is an astounding talent and three three-touchdown passes in the AFC Championship game. He holds the joint record for the most touchdown passes in his first four career playoff games. The numbers he puts up is immense.

But the San Francisco 49ers are more than just a one-trick pony in defence. They have averaged more points per game this season the Chiefs have done and gained more yards per game than the Chiefs.

If their defence turns up, there’s not even a need to dip in handicaps to back them as they are up at 21/20 in the match outright* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 30th, 2020 at 19:59).

The interesting thing about this is that when Garoppolo got that ACL tear in 2018 against the Chiefs, the 49ers totally tanked that season, to just four wins. As a consequence, they got the number two pick in the 2019 draft where they secured Nick Bosa who is now the dominant force in their amazing defensive set up. Can that defence get the 49ers the Super Bowl?
