This is a big showdown in the second round of the US Open 2020 and it is a tricky one for top seed Karolina Pliskova.

While the Czech star had no trouble getting through her first-round match, she faces a tougher challenge here.

It should be a winnable match for Pliskova, but how much of a challenge can the gutsy Garcia put out on the court?

Karolina Pliskova Preview – Pliskova eases through first challenge

Top seed Karolina Pliskova opened with a 6-4 6-0 win over Anhelina Kalinina in the first round of the 2020 US Open.

It was a stroll in the park, but she could face a little more resistance in this one.

Pliskova is still waiting to make her Grand Slam title breakthrough.

She did enter the Western & Southern Open last week where she lost her first match at the event against Veronika Kudermetova.

But it was much better from her at the US Open in that opening foray on Monday.

A Pliskova 2-0 option in set betting is at 5/6 which says quite a bit about the challenge that Garcia, on her day, is capable of putting up.

Our betting prediction:
Pliskova 6-4 Set 1
9/2

Karolina Pliskova is a former US Open finalist, getting there in 2016 but not walking away with the title.

Following back to back quarter-final exits following that, she bowed out surprisingly early last year in the fourth round.

Her 2020 Australian Open campaign never got going either as she lost in the third round there.

The head to head form between Pliskova and Garcia is fascinating as well because it is even at three wins each.

Caroline Garcia Preview – Can Garcia surprise Pliskova?

France’s Carolina Garcia had a comfortable time in her opening round match at Flushing Meadows.

She took a 6-3 6-2 win over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.

The track record of Garcia at the Grand Slams isn’t great, a quarter-final in the 2017 French Open being her best ever effort.

She hasn’t been past the third round of the US Open in any of the previous seven appearances in the main draw.

But the thing with Garica is that on her day, she is extremely gritty and a tough opponent to grind down.

At the Western & Southern Open last week, she picked up a straight-sets win in the opening round against Sloane Stephens.

Although she lost her following match against Victoria Azarenka, she put up a tremendous battle in the second-set.

We are going back for a closer look at the head to head next.

Caroline Garcia won the most recent duel between the two players, which was in Tianjin in 2018.

None of the previous matches between them have gone to three-sets, incidentally.

But because we can’t get there enough for a Garcia 2-0 in set betting, we will have to swing with Pliskova.

There has been just the one singles meeting between the two players previously at a Grand Slam. Pliskova won that 2017 French Open meeting.

Karolina Pliskova vs Caroline Garcia Betting Advice

We don’t for a minute think that Garcia is going to let Pliskova have the run of the court in this second round match.

So immediately we would be interested in the Garcia +4.5 games handicap at 4/5 odds* (odds taken 23:15 GMT Tuesday, 1st September).

She is scrappy enough to take some games off of the top seed and at least keep this close in defeat.

Key Facts – Karolina Pliskova vs Caroline Garcia Betting Tip

  • Karolina Pliskova is the top seed at the US Open 2020
  • Karolina Pliskova and Garcia are 3-3 in the head to head
  • Caroline Garcia won the last meeting with Pliskova

But at the end of the day, we would expect Pliskova to claim the win in this one, even though her recent Slam record is a little shaky.

Neither players have had much time on the court since the season restarted and that’s another reason to expect Pliskova to not run away with it totally.
