Preview: These teams finished the previous season at opposite ends of the league, and that fact has been borne out in the match odds. Ostrava are the favourites after a sixth-place finish last time around but Karvina, whom barely avoided relegation, were the ones celebrating a 2-0 scoreline in the corresponding fixture between the two. Will history repeat itself or will the gulf in the table show?

Karvina Preview – Strong hosts to record another win in this fixture?

The concession of a late penalty proved costly as Karvina begun their third consecutive season in the Czech First League with a disappointing 1-0 loss at Mlada Boleslav. Certainly not the start a team which could only finish in 15th last season, one position off the foot of the league, would have hoped for. They should appreciate this return to home comforts, though.

Survival last season came courtesy of two factors: a 3-2 victory against Vysocina Jihlava in a relegation play-off, and some strong form at home. The latter in particular was incredibly important because without those strong showings in home fixtures, Karvina would have almost certainly finished rock-bottom and thus automatically demoted to the league below.

Out of their total of 32 points, 23 (72%) were earned in home fixtures. Where they secured seven of their nine victories over the course of the season, ending the campaign seemingly having found their groove after winning four of their final five matches at the Mêstský Stadion in eastern Czech Republic. Including a 2-0 success over their matchday opponents, Ostrava. The other successful outcomes coming against Zlin (2-0), Slovan Liberec (2-1) and Dukla Prague (3-0).

Three of those wins were accompanied by a clean sheet, although those were a rarity throughout as Karvina managed to shut out just three sides at home all season long.

Ostrava Preview – Badly out of form visitors really worthy of favourtism?

Not too dissimilar to their opponents in fairness, Ostrava were also left with a sense of frustration on the opening weekend. Perhaps even more so, in fact, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Slovan Liberec despite taking an early lead in the 9th minute. To add insult to injury, the decisive goal was scored right at the death.

The loss in game one did, however, continue some poor form carried over from the previous campaign when they failed to win any of their final six matches (D2 L4). It is now seven games without a win in the league, with five of those resulting in losing outcomes. A significant disclaimer, of course, is that this sequence of form emanates from matches played against the strongest teams in the country.

Due to their excellent performances during the regular season, whereby the team finished in 5th with a respectable record of W13 D6 L11, Ostrava found themselves seeing the season out in the Championship Round alongside some of the finest sides in the country. Therefore it wasn’t all that surprising that they toiled amidst such elite company.

There can, however, be no getting away from how they managed to conclude the campaign without a win in their final nine league games away from home (D2 L7). A lot of those were tough encounters, against teams in the higher reaches of the league, but games at Dukla Prague (1-1), Jablonec (L2-0 and L4-0) and, interestingly, Karvina (L2-0) were all eminently winnable.

Karvina V Ostrava Key Facts:

  • Karvina collected 72% of their total points in the previous season from matches played at home (W7 D2 L8 at home).
  • Ostrava have failed to win any of their last nine away league games (D2 L7).
  • This will be the fourth league meeting between the two at Karvina: the home side are unbeaten so far (W2 D1), winning last season’s encounter 2-0.

Betting Summary

Ostrava finished a lot further up the league last season, showing far greater consistency in registering 15 more points than their matchday rivals. The head-to-head, however, favours the team nearer the foot of the league. Karvina having come out on top in two of the previous three league meetings on home soil, which included a 2-0 victory in March.

Throw in some confidence draining form from the visitors – who are without a win in seven overall, and lasted tasted victory in an away fixture way back in December (D2 L7) – and it makes a bet on the home side all the more compelling.

Karvina or Draw (Double Chance) has some appeal at 3/5 with Betway. The hosts, though, could be without a couple of individuals through a mixture of injury and suspension. An alternative bet, therefore, could be both teams to score. This particular bet would have delivered a winning outcome for us in 59% of Karvina’s league matches at home last season and in precisely half of Ostrava’s away.
