The Scottish League Cup begins this weekend and Kelty Hearts – now a League Two club – will take on Dundee United as both teams play their first matches under new managers.

Kelty Hearts Preview – Can Kelty spring a surprise against Premiership opposition?

Kelty Hearts will be competing in League Two for the first time this season so it’s an exciting period for the club who have big ambitions. Barry Ferguson – who led them to this level from the lowland league – has left to join Alloa and his replacement is one of his former Rangers team-mates Kevin Thomson who is embarking on his first managerial job.

Kelty earned their place in the SPFL by defeating Brechin City 3-1 on aggregate at the end of last season having beaten Highland League winners Brora Rangers to earn that spot. Their league campaign will start at the end of this month when they take on Cowdenbeath at home.

There is plenty of experience in this group of players. A number of them have played in the Premiership or Championship which shows you the ambition and resources that the club have as they bid to continue their climb up the pyramid. Kalum Higginbotham, Michael Tidser, Nathan Austin and Jordan Forster are all very good players at this level.

After this game, Kelty will play East Fife at home before away games Elgin City and Arbroath. Whilst United will be the big favourites to win the group, Kelty will feel they have a chance of second spot and potentially reaching the knockout phase for the first time.

Dundee United Preview – Will United get off to a winning start as they bid to improve of on last year’s showing?

Micky Mellon was only in charge for one season at Tannadice before departing to take over as Morecambe manager. His replacement was a big surprise for most as Dundee United looked to Thomas Courts to take over. Courts has been at the club in several roles within the academy and performance but has no senior experience of coaching other than a short spell overseeing first-team affairs when Mellon and his staff had to self-isolate at the end of last year.

There will be a lot of focus on Courts and how he does in the job, starting with their participation in the League Cup.

Charlie Mulgrew has returned to the club having last played for them during a loan spell in 2006. He’ll bring a lot of experience and a bit of quality at the back which might have been lacking at times last season. United finished ninth on their return to the Scottish Premiership last season and will be hoping to improve on that.

Dundee United never made it past the group stage last season having finished second to eventual winners St Johnstone. That wasn’t enough to qualify for the last-16 which has to be their aim this time around, at a minimum.

Kelty Hearts vs Dundee United Betting Advice

It may seem early but it’s good to see the domestic action return and there will be supporters back at these games as well. Both Kelty and Dundee United will be eager to get off to positive starts under their new managers.

The visitors will no doubt harbour ambitions of going further than their opponents but losing at home to League One Peterhead last season will serve as a reminder that they have to be on their game.

Key Facts – Kelty Hearts  vs Dundee United Betting Tip

  • Kelty will be playing in League Two for the first time having won promotion from the Lowland League
  • Dundee United failed to get out the group stage last season, finishing second to St Johnstone
  • These two met in last year’s League Cup with United edging it 1-0 at home

United averaged less than a goal a game in the league last season and with this being the first competitive game for both I’m taking it to be a low-scoring game as the two try and get into their stride.
