FC Koln – Three straight defeats and looking over their shoulder?

The Billy Goats (W5 D6 L12) moved on to 21 points on 6 February following a 2-1 success away to Gladbach that made it back-to-back league wins at the time, having recorded their first – and only – home win of 2020/21 in their previous encounter against Arminia Bielefeld. Since then, Markus Gisdol’s men have made no inroads whatsoever and are now three points from dropping into the Bundesliga relegation play-off.

Fortunately, opportunity knocks this weekend. FC Koln are unbeaten in nine Bundesliga home games versus Werder Bremen, inflicting more top-flight defeats (28) on Die Werderaner in Cologne than any other side. However, only bottom side Schalke have earned fewer points from matches played on home turf this term than The Billy Goats, who are without a goal scored in four of the last five such fixtures (W1 D1 L3).

Werder Bremen – Inconsistent but improving?

Florian Kohfeldt and his Werder Bremen (W6 D8 L8) outfit were the toast of the Bundesliga last week, becoming the first team to get the better of Eintract Frankfurt in 2021, in turn bringing an abrupt end to the Eagles’ 11-match unbeaten run. On Sunday, they will attempt to halt a streak of their own – that the nine-game sequence, stretching back to December 2005, since their last taste of victory here in Cologne.

Those three points, deserved at that, moved them on to 26 for the season – nine more than they had at this same stage last term when they had conceded 21 more goals. While a resounding 4-0 defeat on their latest away outing, in Hoffenheim, was the first occasion in ten previous Bundesliga games (W4 D3 L3) in which the defence was breached more than once, thus highlighting the profound improvements at the back.

FC Koln Vs Werder Bremen Betting Advice

Hosts Koln possess a rotten record at home this season, their only such victory in eleven fixtures at RheinEnergieStadion coming against an Arminia Bielefeld side currently occuping the Bundesliga relegation play-off having been promoted last term. However, their record versus Sunday’s opponents Werder Bremen is a lot more favourable, winning four and losing none of the past nine Bundesliga meetings on home soil.

FC Koln Vs Werder Bremen – Key Facts:

  • Nine home Bundesliga games without defeat (W4 D5) versus Werder Bremen for FC Koln, who boast just one home win all season (W1 D3 L7) having failed to even score in four of the last five.
  • December 2005 was the last occasion Werder Bremen were victorious in Cologne, registering three wins from eleven away league outings in 2020/21 (W3 D4 L4).
  • Nine of the last twelve Bundesliga meetings between the sides produced Under 2.5 Goals. This includes their clash in November in Bremen, which ended 1-1.

Despite going more than 15 years since their last victory here, I quite like the chances of a Werder Bremen victory. Florian Kohfeldt’s charges have improved on last season’s dismal campaign, tightened up considerably (11 conceded in last 10 Bundesliga games) and are facing a Cologne side coming off the back of three straight defeats having failed to score in four of the past five home games.
