Preview: Some Super Lig action in Turkey on Monday as third in the table Konyaspor welcome a Yeni Malatyaspor team that would end the previous term higher up in the standings than their opponents but find themselves settled in mid-table at present. The in-form hosts are the favourites, however, the visitors are capable of spoiling the party at the Konya Buyuksehir Belediye Stadium.

Konyaspor Preview – Hosts to land third straight league win?

The Green and White of Konyaspor take to the field in the final game of the weekend in Turkey’s top division. Managed by the 54-year-old Aykut Kocaman, who was a prolific forward during his playing career, the club are currently enjoying a reasonably successful period. Last season ended with them in the comfort of mid-table, while the current campaign has them prominently positioned in third (W3 D3 L1, GF10 GA6) prior to this weekend’s games.

If results elsewhere were to fall favourably meanwhile, there is a scenario whereby this team could climb into top spot. That would require a winning outcome versus Yeni Malatyaspor, who they claimed four points against during the previous term – winning 1-0 away and drawing 1-1 at home – but are still to beat on their own patch (D1 L1). There is, however, enough momentum behind them now to suggest this could be about to change.

Prior to the international break Konyaspor travelled to Kasimpasa and won handsomely, netting four times in a 4-1 victory. That made it back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, beating Kayserispor 2-1 at home the previous week. Both successes were earned against teams currently in the bottom three, though, while at home they have only managed the one win thus far (W1 D2, GF4 GA3) but do remain unbeaten.

Yeni Malatyaspor Preview – Visitors to add to impressive sum of goals?

The season would begin earlier than usual for Yeni Malatyaspor. The club were involved in competitive action as far back as July, when their successful exploits in the league last season, finishing fifth, ensured a first ever spell in Europe awaited. Unfortunately the continental dream disintegrated early, bowing out of the Europa League after two rounds of qualifiers. That leaves them, once again, solely focused on the league.

It has been a mixed league campaign so far. The opening matchday saw them condemn the runners-up of last season, Istanbul Basaksehir, to a 3-0 defeat as the home side, where they also held the reigning champions, Galatasaray, to a 1-1 draw. Away from home, though, it is two defeats from three with a 4-0 victory against Ankaragucu offsetting losses in Trabzonspor (2-1) and Antalyaspor (3-0).

Some confidence will have been restored before the recent break, however, after thumping newly promoted Denizlispor 5-1. Macedonian forward Adis Jahovic claimed four of that impressive tally, and while the emphatic result was chalked up at home it was, nevertheless, a morale boosting outcome for a group trying to galvanize their season following the disappointment sustained from failure to qualify for Europe.

Konyaspor V Yeni Malatyaspor Key Facts:

  • Konyaspor begun the weekend in third position (W3 D3 L1) and are unbeaten at home (W1 D2).
  • Yeni Malatyaspor come into this latest bout of matches in 10th (W3 D1 L3) but having lost two of their three away contests (W1 L2).
  • The head-to-head is evenly split with a win apiece in four previous meetings, although Yeni Malatyaspor are still to lose away from home (W1 D1).

Betting Summary

The hosts are flying at the moment, with Konyaspor bidding to secure a third consecutive win in the league having now won three of their past four such matches. They will no doubt be buoyed by their 4-1 success away from home over Kasimpasa last time out and, moreover, confident in the knowledge they are still to lose a home game this season (W1 D2).

No team has registered more goals in the Turkish Super Lig this season than Yeni Malatyaspor (16), racking up five alone in an emphatic 5-1 thrashing at home to Denizlispor prior to the international break. They have won as many games as their opponents but, to their detriment, have suffered more defeats, particularly on their travels having lost two of three thus far (W1 L2 away).

I quite like the prospect of goals in this contest. The visitors have been deadly in front of goal this season, failing to score on only one occasion away. Whereas Konyaspor are in excellent recent form but have seen their past two home games feature goals for both sides. A disclaimer would have to be a less than conducive head-to-head, with none of the previous four producing over 2.5 goals – though two did finish 1-1.
