Onto Group I next, and a clash between the bottom two teams in this group with hosts and bottom placed Kosovo taking on fifth placed Finland at the Stadiumi i Qytetit in Pristina with only pride left at stake for the home side.

From a war-torn country, formerly Yugoslavia, Kosovo have emerged as a new nation and are now recognised by FIFA on the world footballing stage, but they’ve been dealt some harsh lessons in international football so far in their very short history at this level.

Kosovo started their campaign in promising fashion with a 1-1 draw away at tonight’s opponents, Finland, but things fell apart very quickly thereafter as they’ve since slumped to six defeats on the trot which has left them bottom of the pile in Group I with a poor home record of  0-0-3  2/12 to their name.

Visitors Finland haven’t fared that much better as they sit just one position above Kosovo but three points ahead, thanks to their recent 1-0 home win over third placed Iceland over the weekend. However, there’s been very little to cheer apart from that win for the Fins as they’d previously lost five group matches on the trot prior.

Finland have also lost all three of their away matches so far in this group stage following defeats at Iceland, Ukraine and Turkey amidst an overall record of  0-0-3  2/6, although they’ll be fairly confident that they can put a halt to this losing streak in Kosovo tonight.

Finland have scored 2 goals on just one occasion from their last nine away from home in World Cup qualifiers, and I’m not expecting this game to be a classic by any stretch of the imagination! This should be a low-scoring game with under 2.5 goals being the best option.
