Krasnodar Preview – Shock Ural defeat a timely wake-up call?

It took a stunning strike to condemn them to a shock 1-0 defeat in Ural on Saturday, but even so, to have lost for the second time in four league outings is hugely disappointing for a club harbouring high hopes of bridging the gap on Zenit. That appears fat-fetched as of now. The reigning champions are already six points better off, displaying greater consistency than a Krasnodar (6th – W2 D0 L2) side which came home a distant third in 2019/20.

Prior to last week’s loss at the Ekaterinburg Arena, losing to a Ural side which had opened their accounts in 2020/21 with two draws and a defeat, The Black-Greens had begun brightly enough. Wins over FC Ufa (0-3) and Arsenal Tula (2-0) sandwiching a narrow defeat away at last season’s runners-up, Lokomotiv Moscow. Unfortunately, playing with a man less for much of the second period hampered their comeback efforts last time out.

Back on home soil on Wednesday, Krasnodar can be reasonably confident about a positive result materialising. That is because only Zenit took more points from their home games last season than Murad Musayev’s men (W8 D6 L2), who were beaten only twice – both times after the restart, when their form begin to slide – by Zenit (2-4) and Dinamo Moscow (0-2). They won five of their opening six home match-ups, meanwhile.

CSKA Moscow Preview – Successive defeats a blow to team morale?

A promising start has very quickly unravelled for the former six-time Russian Premier League champions, following up back-to-back victories over FC Khimki (0-2) and FC Tambov – the former back in the top-flight for the first time in more than a decade and the latter barely scraping survival last time around – with successive defeats to last season’s comprehensive champions, Zenit, and a mid-table Rubin Kazan.

Something of a mixed bag so far then. Early performances, however, have hinted at plenty of promise from Viktor Goncharenko’s team. In particular, the manner in which CSKA (7th – W2 D0 L2) pushed Zenit all the way in a recent 2-1 loss in Saint Petersburg. The Red-Blues arguably created the better chances in that game, and would do likewise last weekend, only to let themselves down in the defensive third. A recurring theme.

It is now one clean sheet in four this season, with both teams netting in three as has been the case in five of their last six league games stretching back into last season. A campaign which seen them finish on the front foot, winning four and losing one of their final six matches to claim fourth. Those efforts weren’t quite good enough to qualify for the Champions League, though, which will be their main aim in 2020-21.

Across the previous three seasons, four of six head-to-head encounters between these two teams finished with both among the goals – including both meetings in 2019/20, with CSKA Moscow edging an exciting five-goal clash in Moscow before a 1-1 draw later in the season in Krasnodar. Meanwhile, only one of the past twelve league meetings since 2014 failed to deliver a minimum of two goals.

Krasnodar Vs CSKA Moscow – Key Facts

Particularly CSKA Moscow, whose contests this season have been end-to-end and featured an abundance of goals. As for Krasnodar, they’ve netted two or more in five of their last six matches on home soil. Both, meanwhile, will be keen to make up for hugely frustrating outcomes last time out.
