Preview: The stakes could not be much higher in Russia for this Group E clash between FC Krasnodar, who must avoid defeat to remain alive in the section, and Sevilla, who would be assured of a place in the next round with three points at the Krasnodar Stadium.

Krasnodar Preview – Russian side on elimination brink?

After surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 in Spain against the ten men of Sevilla on Matchday 3, FC Krasnodar (D1 L2) remain on one point from three three games. It leaves them in a perilous situation in Group E knowing a third defeat of the campaign would consign them to an early exit from the competition, despite having a further two group games – at home to Rennes and away to Chelsea – left to contest.

In terms of the chances both teams created in Spain last time out, the Russian side could have few complaints with the final outcome. That those chances were given up while playing with a numerical advantage was alarming. Krasnodar have now lost the xG battle in all three encounters, and comfortably so, allowing an average of 2.4 xGA in their 1-1 draw in Rennes and 4-0 loss here at Krasnodar Stadium to Chelsea.

Their domestic campaign has also been underwhelming, sitting ninth through fifteen Premier League fixtures. Yet their record on their own patch is more encouraging, having lost here only once in seven outings (W4 D2 L1), scoring more goals than any team except for defending champions Zenit. However, Saturday’s 1-0 home win over FC Tambov ended a run of five successive defeats in all competitions.

Sevilla Preview – La Liga outfit can wrap up qualification early?

Europa League holders Sevilla (W2 D1) are one win away from booking their place in the next round after staging a memorable comeback last time out, clawing back a 2-0 deficit at home to FC Krasnodar to claim a 3-2 victory and secure three crucial points. That they did so whilst playing the entire second half with a man less only made their spirited fightback all the more impressive.

Repeat the trick in Russia, where their record isn’t the best it must be said, and the Spanish side will be playing knockout football in the Champions League in 2021. Sevilla sit second in Group E, level on seven points with Chelsea and six clear of Krasnodar and Rennes. However, the club from Andalusia have a wretched record away to Russian opposition, recording one win in nine such meetings (W1 D4 L4).

Julen Lopetegui’s men haven’t been the smartest travellers back home either, registering only four of a possible twelve points in this season’s La Liga (W1 D1 L2), where they sit seven points off the top in seventh. With the goalless draw in England against Chelsea on Matchday 1, Sevilla are winless in four away from home since their last-gasp league victory at newly-promoted Cadiz.

Krasnodar Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

Not an easy contest to predict with any degree of confidence. Sevilla are favourites and would qualify for the latter stages should they oblige, but were untidy to say the least in the reverse fixture, which was at home, and have toiled on the road in 2020/21 where they are without a win in four (D2 L2). Krasnodar do tend to do their better work in Russia, losing one of ten on home soil (W6 D2 L2) but lost 4-0 here to Chelsea.

Krasnodar Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • One point from seven in Group E for Krasnodar, losing to Chelsea (0-4) and Sevilla (3-2) but securing a point in France against Rennes (1-1).
  • Joint-top with Chelsea, Sevilla boast victories over Rennes (1-0) and Krasnodar (3-2) alongside a hard-earned point in England against Chelsea (0-0).
  • Sevilla have won one of their nine previous away encounters versus Russian sides, even losing 2-1 on their sole visit to Krasnodar in October 2018.

I quite like the prospect of goals. Sevilla have two clean sheets in three group outings but were opened up on several occasion by Krasnodar in Matchday 3’s five-goal thriller. The Spaniards have also kept just two clean sheets in six, and just one in five away from home this season, and so could struggle to keep a check on a host side that has been averaging 2.29 goals per-home-game in the Russian Premier League this term.
