LASK Linz Preview – Points deduction a decisive blow?

Top of the Austrian Bundesliga when the regular season concluded in early March, LASK Linz (2nd – W17 D3 L2) instead begin the Championship Round – comprising of twelve games against the best six teams in the league – in second place following the surprise decision of the footballing authorities to issue a six-point deduction for breaching health restrictions in relation to training. The club plan to lodge an appeal.

So, without a ball having even been kicked, they have dropped down a place and must now make up three points on leaders Salzburg, which they are more than capable of managing. LASK would amass six points more than their rivals during the first part of the season, failing to win just five of their 22 games (W17 D3 L2) in which they went a perfect 11 from 11 on the road.

They were a lot less consistent at their Linzer Stadion, though, despite posting relatively strong numbers at home: W6 D3 L2. Meanwhile, no team was in better shape prior to the league break than last season’s runners-up. LASK won their last four league games consecutively whilst scoring 13 goals in the process, in a run kick-started by what must have seemed at the time as a hugely significant 3-2 victory in Salzburg.

Hartberg Preview – Difference in quality to tell once more?

Potentially benefiting from a break in the season were Hartberg (6th – W8 D5 L9). As despite qualifying for the Championship Round with four points to spare by clinching the last of six spots, qualification was hardly serene after two draws and three losses in their final five matches. Had the regular season stretched on any longer, things may have turned out differently.

Towards the end of the regular season high-scoring encounters had become the norm with Hartberg, whose last nine games produced a minimum of three goals, averaging in excess of four per game. The majority of them, however, ended up in the back of their net. That doesn’t necessarily augur well ahead of facing an LASK Linz side who would put five past them at Linzer Stadion shortly before the
league took hold in March.

Hartberg haven’t exactly excelled on their travels this season either, with three wins – none of which coming against sides higher than ninth in the standings – garnered from eleven outings (W3 D2 L6). Defensively, no team fares worse in said matches, letting in almost three a game (2.91) on average and conceding three or more seven times. In addition, trips to Salzburg and Linz both went about as bad as could be expected, losing 7-2 and 5-1 respectively.

LASK Linz Vs Hartberg Betting Advice

In both league meetings in 2019/20, Hartberg would earn a surprise lead only to squander their advantage on each occasion, losing 2-1 at home and 5-1 in Linz. However, LASK Linz have posted some inferior numbers at home this season – albeit a record of W6 D3 L2 is still respectable and superior to all bar Salzburg – and would be pushed hard in last season’s corresponding fixture, drawing 3-3.

LASK Linz Vs Hartberg Key Facts

  • There has been a goal scored in the opening ten minutes in seven of LASK Linz‘s eleven home Bundesliga games in 2019/20.
  • On no fewer than seven occasions (out of 11 away games), Hartberg would concede a minimum of three times on their travels this season.
  • A third league meeting of 2019/20 for these sides, with LASK seeking to maintain a perfect record after 2-1 and 5-1 wins.

Although the tempo could be impacted by the absence of a crowd, it would be a surprise were there not several goals. The pair’s last three meetings would all produce Over 2.5 Goals (2/5 Ladbrokes) as well as Both Teams to Score (6/5 888Sport). Considering the gulf between them in March, however, it could pay to back another handsome home victory for LASK Linz.
