LASK Preview – Can LASK put their miserable form at the end of last season behind them?

In a season that promised so much, LASK will look back on the previous campaign for years to come with a feeling of what could have been. The Linz club were leading the Bundesliga heading into the Championship split only to fall foul of league rules around training during the break. The punishment was a six points deduction (halved from 12) and that seen them drop off top spot.

That was the catalyst for a really poor end to the season which seen them going on to lose six of the last 10 league games and eventually finish in fourth spot. The challenge now is how they get over that extreme disappointment.

The man to pay the price for that disaster was Valerien Ismael who lasted just one season in charge. His replacement is former Austrian boss Dominik Thalhammer. Although he enjoyed success with the national team, this will be his first role as a head coach of a club team and his objective is to end the dominance of RB Salzburg.

Thalhammer will be familiar with a number of players in the squad from his time with Austria and that should be an advantage as he looks for a fast start to the campaign.

Austria Wien Preview – Can Peter Stoger get a win his first game against one of the leading clubs in Austria?

It might not have been on the same level as their opponents heartache, but Austria Wien were also left disappointed with how last season ended following narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Europa League. A 3-2 aggregate defeat against Hartberg in the European-playoff ended those hopes and also means they come into the new campaign with something to prove.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Peter Stoger has returned to take charge of Austria Wien having undertaken the same role for season 2012/13 before moving to the German Bundesliga. Stoger led the club to the title during that season in one of the best coaching jobs in recent times.

It’s unlikely that Stoger can repeat that achievement this time around but it’s very likely we’ll see improvement in the team. Striker Christoph Monschein will be one of Stoger’s key players having scored 17 league goals last season. That level of form led to an international call-up for the recent games against Romania and Norway.

Although it was a disappointing campaign overall for Austria Wien last season, they lost just four of their 17 away games. Their last visit here was one of those losses, however, going down 2-0 in November.

LASK vs Austria Wien Betting Advice

Due to their respective disappointments from last season both clubs will be even more determined to start this season in a positive manner. The fact it’s also the first game under new regimes for LASK and Austria Wien only adds to that.

Looking at the odds and the recent history of this fixture, then it’s likely LASK will be the ones celebrating come the end of the game. The hosts have won seven of the last eight meetings. Austria Wien’s last win at this venue came back in 2011 courtesy of a 4-0 thumping.

Key Facts – LASK vs Austria Wien Betting Tip

  • LASK led the Bundesliga at the split only to endure a traumatic end to the season, eventually finishing fourth
  • Austria Wien missed out on qualifying for the Europa League in the playoff, losing 3-2 on aggregate
  • LASK have won seven of the last eight meetings against this opponent

There is some more optimism around Austria Wien due to the return of Stoger but he could barely have asked for a more challenging opening game. LASK should get the victory – and with at least three goals scored in six of the last eight meetings, take the home win with over 2.5 goals in the game.
