LASK Preview – Can LASK make it two straight wins to the start the league campaign?
LASK finished fourth last season behind champions Salzburg, Saturday’s opponents and Sturm Graz. There would have been some disappointment considering the growth of the club in previous seasons and Dominik Thalhammer will be looking to improve the team’s fortunes this season. The former Austrian boss came with a big reputation and that brings its own pressure. He’ll have learned a lot from his maiden campaign which also included a heavy cup final defeat to Salzburg.
LASK started this season with a 1-0 win away to Rheindorf Altach – the only goal of the game coming from Phillip Wiesinger. It was a repeat of the score the last time they travelled to that opponent and it means they have now won their last eight games them.
There have been some notable departures for LASK during the summer and their top scorer from last season (Johannes Eggestein) has returned to his parent club following a successful loan spell. Christoph Monschein has come in from Austrian Vienna and despite a poor season last year, he did hit 17 goals in 2019/20 so is proven at this level.
LASK will also be hoping to ensure they qualify for the group stages of European football. They will enter at the third round of qualifying with the playoff to come after that. Having reached the last-16 of the Europa League two seasons back they will be hopeful of a prolonged run.
Rapid Vienna Preview – Will Rapid put their early season disappointments behind them here?
Rapid Vienna are having to pick themselves up off the ground after an agonising 3-2 aggregate defeat to Sparta Prague in the second round of Champions League qualification. They held a 2-1 first leg lead and the tie was heading for extra-time before conceding a goal in the last 10 minutes. They’ll now attempt to make the group stages of the Europa League when taking on Anorthosis Famagusta over two legs.
Rapid also lost their first game of the new league season, going down 2-0 at home to Hartberg so they will be feeling the pressure even at this early stage of the campaign.

Dietmar Kuhbauer has done a good job overall, though, and two consecutive second place finishes is testament to that. Ercan Kara was pivotal in them finishing runners up behind Salzburg last season. The striker scored 20 goals in all competitions and will be hoping to get off the mark for the season in this game.
Despite their domestic and European disappointments in the early part of the season Rapid will take confidence from their recent good record against LASK. They’re unbeaten in their last seven and have won six of those.
