Preview: Lazio were in Europa League action on Thursday and will be keen to avoid a European hangover on Sunday, hosting a Parma side which had the whole week to plan accordingly for this very fixture. It is a match-up which pits the teams in 9th and 15th place respectively against one another, with the Stadio Olimpico providing the backdrop.

Lazio Preview – Le Aquile to atone for Thursday’s European setback?

It is back to Italy and Serie A for Lazio, who were in Romania for a Europa League group stage encounter with CFR Cluj on Thursday. Simone Inzaghi’s side appeared to be on their way to an important three points when opening the scoring early, but the hosts responded with two unanswered goals to condemn Le Aquile to a second defeat in as many competitive games.

Last weekend saw them beaten 2-1 away to SPAL, in what was almost a repeat performance, with Ciro Immobile again handing Lazio the initiative early on only for the opposition to be allowed back into proceedings. That could well be a recurring theme with this team in the forthcoming campaign, as while Lazio remain dangerous in attacking phases (1.8xGF average in Serie A this season), they continue to allow opposing teams chances (1.1 xGA).

It is now no win, or clean sheet, since defeating Sampdoria 3-0 on the road on the opening weekend. There had been a heated derby with fierce locals AS Roma in between, with Luis Alberto earning his side a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw, but the bigger picture shows a team without a win in its last three competitive fixtures. While perhaps too early to draw conclusions, these are still worrying times for a group which didn’t exactly end the previous term well, winning just three of its final ten league fixtures (W3 D2 L5).

Parma Preview – Visitors to secure a second consecutive away win of the season?

Perhaps a touch fortunate to be competing in Serie A for another term, after a dismal 2018/19 campaign in which they finished three points above the relegation places having secured only three wins from January onwards (W3 D7 L9). Parma have made the sort of start that would suggest another tumultuous season awaits.

Just the three points have been registered so far, which all came courtesy of a 3-1 victory away to Udinese in what was a flattering outcome based on the quality of chances both sides created (xG: UDI 1.46 – PAR 1.06). They say luck evens itself out and that was certainly the case last weekend, as a 3-1 home loss at the expense of Cagliari was unfair to say the least (xG: PAR 1.36 – CAG 0.64).

Meanwhile, their 1-0 defeat at home to Juventus on the opening weekend could and should have been by a bigger margin. So there is plenty for manager Roberto D’Aversa to work on if his Parma side are to avoid another campaign flirting with the idea of relegation. However, their record on the road last season (W5 D4 L10) didn’t differ all that much from when at home although one of those defeats was a heavy 4-1 scoreline in this same fixture.

Lazio V Parma Key Facts:

  • Both teams arrive having lost their latest Serie A encounters: Lazio losing 2-1 away to SPAL, and Parma falling to a 3-1 defeat at home to Cagliari.
  • These teams have seen two of their first three respective Serie A fixtures produce both teams to score.
  • Lazio have won the previous six league meetings with Parma, which becomes seven in a row when at home including a 4-1 success last season.

Betting Summary

The Europa League defeat to CFR Cluj in Romania on Thursday only allows Lazio a few days to recover and digest what was a second consecutive defeat within the space of a week, having lost 2-1 at SPAL in last weekend’s Serie A action. Simone Inzaghi’s men continue to pose a big threat in front of goal and should be very difficult to contain once more.

Parma have the benefit of having the entire week to plan specifically for this game, with coach Roberto D’Aversa in urgent need of another positive outcome following a home defeat (1-3) to a poor Cagliari side last weekend. They were, however, victorious on their only away outing of the season, when beating Udinese 3-1 in Udine, although that was a first win on the road since beating the same opponent back in January (W1 D4 L5 in Serie A away matches since).

The home side desperately need a win to climb the table and arrest a recent slide in results. That win could be forthcoming this weekend, facing a poor Parma outfit whose performances thus far are that of bonafide relegation candidates. Backing Lazio outright simply isn’t possible at the odds, though. These teams are 2/3 when it comes to both teams scoring in their respective Serie A matches this season, so combining that with a Lazio win could be the way to go.
