Lazio Preview

The Serie A club have reached this stage courtesy of finishing second in their group behind Eintracht Frankfurt. It was a really up and down group phase for Simeone Inzaghi’s men who won three and loss three, conceding nine and scoring 11. It was a group that included an excellent 3-1 away to Marseille but also a humbling 4-1 defeat in Frankfurt. It suggests there is little middle ground for Lazio, in European competition at least. The Romans have made the knockout phase for three of the last four seasons now with their best effort coming last season – progressing all the way to the quarter finals where they were narrowly beaten by RB Salzburg. Lazio have lost some key players in the time proceeding that, however, not least the extremely influential Felipe Anderson who has since moved to West Ham so whether they can repeat that level of performance this time around remains to be seen. Their recent form has been fairly good though which will give the confidence, losing only two of their last eight which has put them back in contention for a top four finish in Serie A.

Sevilla Preview

You can’t help but associate Sevilla with this competition. The La Liga outfit have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League five times in the last 15 years which is simply an incredible return for a club who had never won a European trophy beforehand. There may be a few clubs favoured by the bookmakers over them this season but they’re certainly not a club you could write off simply with their history. They were impressive without being overly so in their passage to this stage, winning four and losing twice in the group stage which was enough to top their section. It was a much more comprehensive performance than that of their opponents though, as the Seville club scored an eyewatering 18 times. Like Lazio, however, they are in the hunt for a top four finish in their domestic league where they currently occupy fourth spot but there are plenty of dangerous teams lurking below them. And they also know the value of winning this competition and the reward of Champions League football it brings.

Lazio v Sevilla Betting Preview

I mentioned in the introduction that this is a really fascinating tie and that’s because of tradition both these clubs have. The goal for the two of them at the beginning of this campaign would be to qualify for the Champions League because they know that brings with it the biggest rewards and at this point in the season, they still have two options available to them to achieve that.

In terms of this tie, I don’t think there’s any doubt Sevilla are favourites to progress into the next round but Lazio showed last season just how dangerous they can be – especially at home. The visitors are very strong on their travels in this competition – as you would expect from a team with their success in it. What has been a common theme in both clubs’ games in this year’s Europa League is goals – and plenty of them. There were 24 goals in Lazio’s six group games and the same number in Sevilla’s. It may be the knockout phase but their approach to the competition is unlikely to change too much so I’m keen on taking over 2.5 goals which would have been a winner in five of Lazio’s six games thus far and the same amount of Sevilla’s group matches.
