Lazio Preview – Victory imperative by any means necessary?

It has been a little too nervy, a little too close for comfort, as far as second-place Lazio (2nd – W21 D5 L3) are concerned. Securing a second straight Serie A win from a losing position away to Torino on Tuesday. The Biancocelesti would also trail at home to Fiorentina in their previous encounter, but, like in Turin, this season’s surprise title protagonists fought back from 1-0 down to win 2-1.

From a neutral perspective, Lazio’s resilient displays are preventing Juventus, four points clear at the summit, from running away with another Scudetto. Simone Inzaghi has done an outstanding job, overseeing one defeat in his last 24 Serie A games in charge (W19 D4 L1). A phenomenal feat considering his team were never really thought of as being capable of sustaining a meaningful challenge at the top.

Meanwhile, nobody – not even Juventus or Inter Milan, in first and third respectively – could get the better of Inzaghi’s free-flowing side at Stadio Olimpico this season. Atalanta, Roma and Hellas Verona among a select few to have avoided defeat there. Moreover, the latter remain the only ones to lure a blank from a Lazio attack that has fired off two or more goals in 12 of 15 home games (W12 D3) thus far.

AC Milan Preview – Will exertions in SPAL hinder their chances?

Mixed emotions at full-time of Wednesday’s entertaining 2-2 draw in SPAL, who are seemingly destined to make a swift return to Serie B but had no qualms denting the Rossoneri’s bid for a top-six finish that would guarantee them qualification into next season’s Europa League group stage. The overriding emotion was one of relief, though, at having not lost a fixture they seemed certain to lose at 2-0 down.

AC Milan (7th – W12 D7 L10) have now collected seven points from three games since the Serie A resumption, registering wins over Lecce (1-4) and Roma (2-0) prior to rescuing a draw against the nine men of SPAL, but have one win in four on their travels (W1 D2 L1). An alarming return when considering that three of four said opponents (Fiorentina, Lecce and SPAL) rank no higher than 13th in the standings.

Yet, this season, only four teams boast more away wins than AC Milan (W7 D2 L6 away), who were only denied victory in last season’s corresponding fixture by a 94th minute equaliser. Trips to the big sides this season have proven rather fruitless, however, losing away to all of the current top-five and by an aggregate of 3-12. They will also have a day less to recover compared to their opponents, who were involved on Tuesday.

Lazio Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

It is a game neither side can afford to lose. Lazio have already allowed Juventus to edge four points clear of them while AC Milan are currently playing catch up in the race to finish in the Europa League berths. The odds on a home win stand out though. Lazio are playing like a side who know they need to win every remaining point, exemplified by recent comebacks against Fiorentina and Torino, and have been incredibly consistent at home this season.

Lazio Vs AC Milan – Key Facts

  • One of two teams (the other being Juventus) still to lose a home fixture in Serie A in 2019/20, Lazio could complete a league double over AC Milan after prevailing 2-1 at the San Siro in November.
  • Six sides have collected more away points this season than AC Milan (23 – W7 D2 L6), with the Rossoneri winning one of their last four said games (W1 D2 L1)
  • Both teams scored in each of the previous seven league meetings staged inside Lazio’s Stadio Olimpico, with AC Milan winning on just one of nine previous visits (W1 D4 L4).

Lazio have only failed to win three of fifteen home games so far, losing none. Imperious stuff, and, as such, AC Milan will need to raise their game considerably to compete for some of the spoils on offer. The Rossoneri, however, have already been beaten at Atalanta (5-0), Inter Milan (4-2), Juventus (1-0) and Roma (2-0), scoring only in the Milan Derby. Furthermore, the only side from the top-five missing are Lazio.
