Lazio – Rome can help level the playing field?

A nervy 2-2 draw here in Rome with Belgian side Club Brugge in their final Group F fixture ensured Lazio sneaked through to the Champions League knockout rounds for only the second time, finishing runners-up behind another German outfit, Borussia Dortmund, with a record of two wins and four draws. Those pair of victories would both come in Italy though, where they will hope to established a foothold in this tie.

Simone Inzaghi’s men would record 3-1 home wins over the aforementioned Dortmund as well as Russian champions Zenit during this season’s group stage, thus extending the club’s fine record on their own patch in European competition. The Biancocelesti winning seven of their previous eleven home matches on the continent (D1 L3), including three in succession prior to the Club Brugge stalemate.

This opening leg could therefore go a long way in deciding the Serie A side’s fate up against the reigning German and European champions. Lazio, who are in superb form domestically with seven wins in eight, do, however, possess a not-so-secret weapon. Striker Ciro Immobile clinched the European Golden Shoe in 2019/20, with 30 goals, and netted five times in the group stage, two more than any Bayern player.

Bayern Munich – European champions recently off the pace?

In 2019/20, Bayern Munich became the first club from Germany to wrap up the group phase with a perfect record of six wins, before going on to claim their sixth European title in the final against Paris Saint-Germain. It was a feat they very nearly repeated this time around, only to be denied in the penultimate fixture, held in Spain by Atletico Madrid as they topped Group A with a record of five wins and a draw.

Head coach Hansi Flick, the mastermind behind last season’s dominant performance in Europe which seen his team win all eleven matches while averaging shy of four goals per game, rotated his pack for that final group stage fixture as the record Bundesliga champions saw their 15-game winning streak in the competition snuffed out. They have now lost once in their last 27 European contests (W21 D5).

On the domestic front, however, Die Roten sampled that losing feeling as recently as this past weekend following a 2-1 defeat away at in-form Frankfurt. That a second winless outing in quick succession, after they were surprisingly held at home to a thrilling 3-3 draw by newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld. That their first port of call since returning from Qatar with the FIFA Club World Cup.

Lazio Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

A nightmare last-sixteen draw for Lazio, who only won two of four group stage fixtures, seen the Italians pitted against the reigning European champions. Yet their recent form is excellent (8 wins in 10) as is their record in Europe when playing at home, recording seven victories across their last eleven Stadio Olimpico encounters. Among them a 3-1 triumph last October over 2019/20 Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

Lazio Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • During this season’s group stage, Lazio finished in second in Group F (W2 D4). Bayern Munich, meanwhile, topped Group A winning all but one game (W5 D1).
  • Both Teams to Score was a bet which landed in all three Borussia Dortmund home games during the group phase (W2 D1), and all three Bayern away fixtures (W2 D1).
  • This will mark the first meeting in UEFA Competition between last season’s fourth-best team in Italy and the current German champions.

Facing the current German champions is clearly a step up, even more so in a competition Bayern Munich have well and truly made their own in the past season-and-a-half. But the visitors have looked fatigued since returning from Qatar for the Club World Cup, conceding five in two subsequent outings (D1 L1). Lazio, meanwhile, are without a clean sheet in UEFA competition for 17 matches. Back goals in Rome.
