Lazio’s title hopes suffered a huge blow in midweek and they will be looking to bounce back when hosting draw specialists Fiorentina on Saturday evening.

Two goals up away to Atalanta in the first 20 minutes had Lazio dreaming even more of a first Serie title in 20 years. The fact that they were unable to hold on to that lead and ending up leaving Bergamo with no points could well be the defining point of what has been a very good season so far. Simone Inzaghi’s men were unable to halt Atalanta when they got into full flow and now sit four points behind Juventus at the top of the table.
There is absolutely no disgrace in losing to Atalanta but there will be some regret and a lot of frustration at being two goals up and not being able to see it out.
Four points is in no way an insurmountable deficit but the challenge for Lazio is to bounce back from that disappointment which the best teams are able to. And is a mark of champions. The fact that they are likely to be seven points behind (Juventus host lowly Lecce on Friday) is just going to heap more pressure on Inzaghi and his players.
No visiting team has beaten Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico this season. Their record is 11 wins and three draws with Verona, Atalanta and Roma the only teams to have taken anything away from them.
Fiorentina Preview – Can Fiorentina end their run of draws to record a first win in four?
Giuseppe Iachini took over as Fiorentina boss last December and he is slowly moving the club clear of safety. Their last 10 games in Serie A have seen them lost just two (one against Juventus, one against Atalanta) and more crucially they have been able to pick up three wins in that time. Those victories are the key reason which has seen them move closer to mid-table and six points clear of the relegation zone.
As there are still 11 games to go then six points is still going to have them looking over their shoulder but they are showing much more resilience under this coach than earlier in the season.

Although it was another point towards safety, Monday’s draw with Brescia would have been a frustrating one for Fiorentina because it was a home game against a team below them. Those are the sort of games where they will be expecting to pick up points and would give them some more cushion going into fixtures like this one on Saturday.
Fiorentina have taken some notable scalps on their travels this season beating both Milan and Napoli and also getting a point against Atalanta.
