Lazio Preview – Can Lazio bounce back from disappointing last time out?

Maurizio Sarri had a brilliant start to life in Rome with Lazio winning their first two league games in convincing fashion. A 3-1 win away to Empoli and trashing six past Spezia had the club’s supporters dreaming of what could be under their new coach and beginning to forget about Inzaghi who had essentially overachieved before departing in the summer. It’s been a reality check since, however, as Lazio have picked up just one win in their last five games.

That one victory was important, though, as Lazio were victorious in the derby against Roma. That will only enhance Sarri’s reputation amongst the support but being 10 points off the leaders so early in the season will not. Lazio are also four points behind their arch rivals who currently hold fourth spot which brings Champions League qualification.

 

Lazio remain unbeaten at home this season with three wins and a draw from four matches across Serie A and the Europa League – so we know they perform better at the Olimpico than away from it considering they have lost three of their last four on their travels.

Ciro Immobile continues to be the main goal threat for Lazio with six goals in as many league games. He’s found the net 129 in Serie A since joining the club in 2016. He’ll be hoping for better than when he faced Inter in this fixture last season when he was sent off.

It’s hard to be overly critical of Inter Milan’s start to the domestic season as they remain unbeaten after seven games, winning five of them. That said, they are still four points off top and sit third with rivals AC also above them in the table. Inzaghi will not be overly despondent but might be somewhat frustrated by recent performances.

A missed penalty denied them three points at home to Atalanta whilst they have taken one point from their first two Champions League matches. Despite beating Sassuolo last time out they rode their luck and know they have to find a higher standard going forward.

More encouraging is they are the highest scorers in the league so are not missing the contribution of Romelu Lukaku as much as many would have thought. The signings of Edin Dzeko from Roma and Joaquin Correa, formerly of Lazio, countering that loss.

Correa looks set to be available to face his old club along with Lautaro Martinez despite the duo only returning from international duty with Argentina on Friday. They, along with Dzeko, have combined for 13 goals in the league so far.

Simone Inzaghi has over 15 years of service with Lazio, covering a decade plus as a player and then more recently as their head coach. He’s won league titles and cups across both roles but Saturday will be all about ensuring his current employers get the three points which will keep them on track to retain Serie A.

Sarri will be hoping to spoil that homecoming and continue what has a very impressive home record.
