Porto hold a narrow advantage following the first leg last week but Lazio will be hoping that home advantage can make the difference as the two go head to head once again in Rome.

Lazio Preview – Can Lazio overturn the first leg deficit to book their place in the last-16?

It hasn’t always been straightforward and there have been some underwhelming performances along the way, but there are signs that Maurizo Sarri is beginning to get this Lazio team playing the way he wants. It was always likely there would be a transition period considering the years that Simone Inzaghi had as coach of the club, but Sarri is now showing why he was the one chosen as the successor.

Lazio are in sixth place in Serie A and just four points off of fourth place. It may not have been the objective at the beginning of the season but they are very much in the conversation now. It is now just one defeat in their last nine league games. They have some big fixtures coming up but they’re definitely finding consistency at the right time.

Although the domestic route would appear to be their most realistic chance of playing in the Champions League next season, Sarri will be well aware that his offers an alternative opportunity. The Lazio boss won the competition when in charge of Chelsea.
Prior to their defeat in Portugal, Lazio finished second in the group stage. It was a competitive section which seen them win only two of their six matches but losing only once proved to be the difference as they pipped Marseille to second by two points.

Porto Preview – Will Porto complete their job as they seek to continue their European journey?

Porto continue to set the pace domestically with a six point lead at the top of the Primeira Liga, looking well set to reclaim their title from rivals Sporting Lisbon. It also means they can continue to target this competition and their hopes of winning a first European trophy since their success in this tournament back in 2011.

They have negotiated the first leg of this tie courtesy of two goals from Spanish attacker Toni Martinez but Sergio Conceicao (who returns to a stadium where he enjoyed two spells as a player in the early 00’s) will know there is a lot of work to do.

Porto’s last defeat was the 3-1 loss at home to Atletico Madrid which ultimately seen them drop into this competition from the Champions League which they were more than a tad unfortunate with. That narrow miss indicates just how talented this squad are and even though Luis Diaz has moved on, you feel if they can get through this tie they will be a real threat heading into the last-16.

Those credentials are enhanced further by the fact that Porto held AC Milan – the current leaders of Serie A – away from home whilst beating them 1-0 in Portugal.

Lazio vs Porto Betting Advice

Whoever wins this game will know they are a danger to the remaining teams in the competition. There was little to choose between Porto and Lazio in the first leg and although the hosts will hope to utilise their strong home record to their advantage, they know the quality Porto have and will be aware they took four points off a team who are currently 13 points better off than Lazio in the league.

Key Facts –  Lazio vs Porto Betting Tip

  • Lazio have lost just once at home this season – nine wins and six draws
  • Porto have drawn away to Milan and Atletico Madrid already in Europe this season
  • Two goals from Spanish striker Toni Martinez have given the Portuguese outfit the advantage

This has the makings of a really intense occasion in Rome. It could even be a tie which goes all the way to extra time. For that to happen, both teams need to score and that looks to be an obvious selection for this one.
