Lazio Preview – Stunning season at risk of petering out?

The Biancocelesti had only lost two matches all season (26 games) up until the league was suspended in early March, but have lost three of five (W2 L3) since lockdown was lifted whilst claiming just six of fifteen points. Simone Inzaghi’s team were only a point off top spot and unbeaten in nineteen before the break, winning fifteen. However, it would appear the stoppage has had a profound impact on their Scudetto aspirations.

Any hopes of clinching a first title since 1999-00 are dwindling. Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat in Lecce, who were in the bottom three prior to kick-off having lost six games on the bounce, has left Lazio (2nd – W21 D5 L5) seven points adrift of top spot. Their only consolation being Juventus’ thrilling demise away to AC Milan, who last weekend thrashed Lazio 3-0 inside Stadio Olimpico, which prevented The Old Lady from surging ten points clear.

Not even the presence of Ciro Immobile and Felipe Caicedo, who were both serving suspensions for the loss to AC Milan, in midweek could inspire a return to winning ways. Although the latter would at least open the scoring. Meanwhile, defender Patric will now serve a lengthy suspension following his red card for biting an opponent last time out, which is rather ironic seeing as how Lazio appear to have lost their bite since the restart.

Sassuolo Preview – Pursuit of Europa League will keep Sassuolo honest?

It would appear Sassuolo (10th – W11 D7 L12) hasn’t quite given up the ghost of trying to sneak into a Europa League position before the season is done. A disappointing return of two points from three games once Serie A was allowed to resume last month seemed to have scuppered their plans of a top-seven finish, however a subsequent run of three straight victories has hauled the Black and Greens back into contention.

All three recent successes were hard-earned, overcoming Fiorentina (1-3) and and Bologna (1-2) on the road either side of a thrilling 4-2 win over Lecce back home in Emilia-Romagna. It now means all six post-restart fixtures – with the others against Atalanta (L4-1), Inter Milan (3-3) and Hellas Verona (3-3) – featured both teams on the scoresheet and certainly no shortage of goals.

In fact, six of their last seven Serie A victories were despite conceding. Sassuolo prefer to do things the hard way it seems. Beat Lazio, meanwhile, and they would win three consecutive away games for the first time in Serie A since February 2017. More important it would close the gap on AC Milan in seventh to just three points, with the Rossoneri facing a tough proposition in Naples the following day.

Lazio Vs Sassuolo Betting Advice

There is a sense of desperation about this particular meeting with neither really affording not to win this fixture. Lazio are on the ropes as far as their flailing title hopes are concerned, losing successive matches to fall seven points behind the Serie A leaders, while Sassuolo must make up six points on the Europa League places so cannot afford to concede further ground. It should make for a compelling watch.

Lazio Vs Sassuolo – Key Facts

  • Back-to-back league defeats for Lazio, whose five fixtures since the Serie A restart would all contain at least three goals, with four finishing with both teams scoring.
  • Goals by the bucket load since the Serie A resumption for Sassuolo, whose five said matches returned scores of 2-1, 3-1, 4-2 and a couple of 3-3 draws.
  • Six of the past seven Serie A head-to-heads produced both teams to score, including each of the last three.

Goals feel inevitable. Neither side is yet to feature in a game that hasn’t involved a minimum of three goals since the restart, while only one of their combined ten fixtures during this period didn’t feature both teams scoring. Factor in the precarious predicament both camps find themselves in and we should be in for a flurry of goals and drama in Rome.
