Preview: Following on from Tuesday night’s relief at having qualified for the Champions League knockout rounds, Lazio go in search of just their second league win at the Stadio Olimpico of 2020/21. Seeking to compound the host’s woes, however, are Verona, who are currently one point worse off in Serie A and in excellent away form.

Lazio Preview – Progress in Europe catalyst for upturn in league form?

Having lost their latest Serie A home fixture 3-1 to Udinese, making it one win and five points from five games at the Stadio Olimpico this season, it was vitally important that Lazio (W5 D2 L3) responded next time out. A 2-1 win away to newly-promoted Spezia meant they achieved that particular objective, but it was another unconvincing display from Simone Inzaghi and his team who still languish down in seventh place.

The Biancocelesti found clear-cut opportunities sparse in their latest league outing, and in fact failed to create a single ‘big chance’ against Spezia who were easily the more progressive side on the day (xG: SPE 1.58 – 0.43 LAZ). Only a typically ruthless finish from Ciro Immobile, when sent clean through on goal by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and a converted free-kick by the latter earning them an undeserved three points.

Things only slightly improved in midweek, with Lazio at least looking more like their old menacing self in the attacking third at home to Club Brugge in the Champions League. Yet despite leading 2-1 against ten men, the Italians were the ones who clung on for dear life to a 2-2 scoreline that sent them through to the next round by the skin of their teeth. Their relief at the end palpable, while focus now switches to domestic duties.

Verona Preview – Juric’s men set-up to frustrate on their travels?

The foundations are in place for Hellas Verona (W4 D4 L2) to enjoy another stellar league campaign this season, building on the ninth place finish they attained in 2019/20 on their return to Serie A following a one-term absence. Just two defeats thus far – 1-0 vs Parma & 0-2 vs Sassuolo – is fewer than Napoli and Lazio have managed, while a win over the latter on Saturday will see them leapfrog the men from the Eternal City.

Verona begin Matchday 11 in eighth, ten points clear of the relegation zone and only one shy of Lazio, who they face next having gone the last nine Serie A meetings without registering victory since a 4-1 success on their own patch in 2013. In Rome, meanwhile, the Gialloblu are winless in twelve league and cup encounters (D3 L9) stretching back to their very first clash here in 1990.

If their abysmal head-to-head record is deflating, a quick glance at this team’s previous body of work away from home this season should hearten the soul. Aside from losing their opening away fixture in Parma, Ivan Juric’s side have been incredibly tough to beat on their travels, going to leaders AC Milan (2-2), reigning champions Juventus (1-1) and the usually free-scoring Atalanta (0-2) and earning a positive outcome in all three.

Lazio Vs Verona Betting Advice

If ever there was a time when Verona were well placed to end a miserable record away to Lazio, it is surely now. Up into eighth following last week’s 1-1 home draw with Cagliari, the Gialloblu have lost once in seven league games and unbeaten on the road in the last three – avoiding defeat away to all of AC Milan, Juventus and, more recently, Atalanta. Can they secure a first-ever Serie A away win over Lazio?

Lazio Vs Verona – Key Facts:

  • In Serie A this season, only four teams possess a worse goal difference in home matches than Lazio (-4), who boast one win from five outings (W1 D2 L2) at the Stadio Olimpico.
  • One league defeat in seven (W2 D4 L1), and none in any of their three most recent away matches with AC Milan (2-2), Atalanta (0-2) and Juventus (1-1), for Verona.
  • Lazio are yet to taste defeat at home to Verona in Serie A, winning eight of eleven top-flight meetings held here in Rome since 1990 – but not last term (0-0).

The answer to the above question is yes. Lazio have made an indifferent start in Serie A, winning just half of the time so far, and have been especially inconsistent at home having won once in five league outings inside Stadio Olimpico. Furthermore, their midweek exertions in Europe, when drawing 2-2 in Italy with Club Brugge, could lead to some potentially weary legs towards the end of Saturday’s encounter.
