Preview: An out-of-sorts Le Harve entertain resurgent Guingamp on Monday night in the French second division, Ligue 2. The hosts are in urgent need of a morale boosting victory inside their Stade Océane, although that is far from guranteed up against an opponent seemingly on the up.

Le Harve Preview – No sign of drastic form improving?

Fan expectations presumably went into overdrive at the end of August when, after winning a fourth consecutive league game to cap an unbeaten start to the new term, the club were among the frontrunners in Ligue 2. Unfortunately for them, this ferocious early pace could not be maintained, dropping like a stone ever since to sit nine points off automatic promotion, as well as six adrift of the play-offs, following some truly woeful form.

Le Harve (9th – W4 D7 L3, GF19 GA16) have not managed to record a single league victory since beating Caen 3-0 away from home on 30 August. That is over two months of steady decline, spanning eight games (D5 L3). The latest setback coming against fifth-placed Sochaux, who eased to a 2-0 scoreline as hosts a fortnight ago. Of course, there remains enough time and fixtures to turn the season around. However, current form is such that you couldn’t bank on them doing so anytime soon with any genuine confidence.

Even during their earlier purple patch, much of it came about through some strong performances on their travels as opposed to at home, which is where they play this next fixture. So far, six home encounters in 2019/20 have produced an underwhelming return of seven points out of eighteen (W1 D4 L1), developing a very clear preference for draws. Paris FC, meanwhile, remain the only visiting side who have failed to score at Stade Oceane this season.

Guingamp Preview – Ligue 1 return becoming realistic prospect?

Relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2018-19 season after finishing bottom of the pile, Guingamp (7th – W5 D5 L4, GF23 GA17) are seeking an immediate return to the top-flight. However, some patchy form – on three separate occasions they would record a win, a draw and a loss in that order – has made it very difficult for them to sustain any sort of pressure on the promotion places, managing back-to-back league wins only once.

The latter is of no relevance here, not after a 1-1 draw at home with third-placed AC Ajaccio prior to the recent two week break. But having won before that, thrashing struggling Chambly 5-1 on their travels, it certainly brings a loss in this fixture into the equation. On all three three occasion this season that Guingamp have swiftly followed a win with a draw, they’ve subsequently lost the very next fixture. Coincidental, perhaps, but the precedent is undeniable.

Overall, though, it is Les Rouges et Noir who are in the better shape right now. Just one defeat – a 1-2 reverse at home to Clermont – being the one real negative in an otherwise encouraging six-game spell which includes victories against Le Mans (3-0), Rodez Aveyron (4-1) and, as already mentioned, Chambly. Their goal output has also increased, notching 14 in this same period. Meanwhile, on only one occasion in their last nine Ligue 2 matches would they fail to score at all.

Le Harve V Guingamp Key Facts:

  • Hosts Le Harve have failed to win any of their last four home Ligue 2 matches (D2 L2), nor any of the previous eight league contests overall (D5 L3).
  • Guingamp arrive in strong form with one defeat in six Ligue 2 games (W3 D2 L1), scoring five in victory during their most recent away encounter.
  • The last two competitive meetings were both won by Guingamp, the latest a 2-1 victory in 2017 during a Coupe de France fixture.

Betting Summary

There may only be a point separating them in the Ligue 2 standings but, on current form, these two teams are worlds apart at this moment in time. The hosts have not won a league fixture since the end of August, failing in their last eight attempts (D5 L3) of which four were at home (D2 L2). Their opponents, meanwhile, can boast of three victories from their latest six encounters alone (W3 D2 L1), and would score five in their most recent away fixture.

Goals looked a genuine possibility when reading how Guingamp (23/10 Bet365) have scored in eight of the last nine, but that cannot be reciprocated by Le Harve (11/8 BetVictor) who have fired a blank on five occasions in their last eight matches. That means not only are the visitors bringing with them superior form in general, they also carry a significant goal threat. In any case, it is difficult making a case for the home side, who simply have to be opposed here in one shape or another. Guingamp Draw No Bet is a 6/5 shot with Bet365.
