Lecce Preview – Can Lecce halt their opponents’ good run and win for the first time since September?
Having won promotion to the top-flight last season, this was always likely to be a campaign where Lecce could struggle and where success would be staying in Serie A. Now, around a third into the season, and it looks very much as though they are going to be a permanent fixture in the lower echelons of the league. Lecce are in 16th spot and just a couple of points above the bottom three. With just two wins from their first 12 matches it tells its own story. The last of those victories was back at the end of September when winning 3-1 away to SPAL. The only other time they have taken three points was away to Torino earlier that month which means they are still searching for their first home win of the season.
Coming into this game Lecce know they have to start picking up more wins to try and stay above the bottom three. To their credit, although they do not win often, they have been able to pick up four draws in their last five matches. Those points are always important when it’s so tight at the bottom.

There’s no doubting who the surprise package of the season has been so far in Serie A. Cagliari – a team who finished 15th last season and only three points clear of the final relegation spot – are currently in a Champions League position. It’s been an astonishing turnaround in a short space of time, albeit there has been significant changes to the playing squad. Coming into this game Cagliari have won five of their last six games including their last three. It’s only two defeats in a dozen matches and Rolando Maran’s team have been sensational to this point. With a relatively kind run of fixtures to come they have a great opportunity to maintain their place amongst the top four.
The signings of Radja Nainggolan, Marko Rog and Giovanni Simeone have made a huge impact on this team and brought much needed quality from midfield forward. The trio will be looking to continue their excellent form and maintain their unbeaten away record with three wins and two draws from their first five games on the road.
