Championship Betting at William Hill

It’s been a fascinating Championship season so far with numerous twists and turns. The big games keep on coming as well with Friday’s night clash between first and sixth placed. Continue reading for a match preview of Leeds against Derby with a selected best betting tip.

Leeds United Preview

The biggest compliment you can pay to Leeds and their manager Marcelo Bielsa is that they remain top of the table by a couple of points despite losing their last two games in the Championship. It was shaping up to be a festive period to be remembered having manufactured magnificent comebacks against Aston Villa and Blackburn, but Leeds were undone in consecutive games at home to Hull City and then away to Nottingham Forest on New Years Day. Whilst they were unwelcome and perhaps surprising defeats, there were also signs within them that something special is happening at Elland Road under this regime and they could well be returning to the top flight after so long away. Having been a goal down and being reduced to 10 men away to Forest, Leeds dominated proceedings for an hour, taking a 2-1 lead. They were eventually undone but that sort of resilience and desire – combined with their quality – should see them go very close to automatic promotion. They will also not have the distraction of the FA Cup having went down 2-1 away to QPR last Sunday but now the team have to respond from three straight defeats and begin picking up some important wins, starting with Friday’s visit of Derby. Due to the competition within this league there’s never an easy period but the next few games especially may go a long way to determining Leeds’ fate with three of their next five games against teams in the top six.

Derby County Preview

Like his opposite number on Friday, Frank Lampard has went about his business in a refreshing way having taken over as Derby boss in the summer. Unlike Bielsa, Lampard does not have the vast experience to call upon with this being his first senior post but it’s been a really promising start. The Rams have been in and around the playoff race for a number of years but have always found a way to fall at one of the final hurdles. Lampard’s biggest challenge was to instil more belief to enable them to get beyond the final stage and make it into the Premier League. His team currently sit in sixth spot with a useful four-point cushion over seventh placed Forest but we all know there is plenty of time for that to change. Lampard will take his team to Yorkshire on Friday in relatively good form but may be slightly frustrate by the number of draws they have been involved in of late. Three of their last five in the league have finished with a share of the points and last week’s home tie with Southampton in the FA Cup ended 2-2, although they came from two goals behind on that occasion. Three points on Friday would certainly go some way to compensating for some silly dropped points of late.

Leeds United v Derby County Betting Advice

It was the first meeting between these two back in the very early stages of the season where you started to think that Leeds and Bielsa were building something special. The current league leaders won 4-1 away from home and announced themselves as a team to watch. It’s proven to be accurate and they come into Friday’s match with a different level of expectation. Derby have responded very well to that defeat, though, and they have shown time and time again that they can compete with the top teams in the Championship, of which they are one.

The gap between these two teams is just eight points so it’s only natural that the visitors will be looking at this as a game which would propel them into the automatic promotion conversation. It will be a tough ask, however, as Leeds have lost only twice at home all season. A key theme of Derby’s away games has been the amount of goals in them. Seven of their last eight away fixtures in the Championship have ended with both teams scoring and Leeds’ recent defensive frailties (only three clean sheets in last six at home) indicates we could see similar on Friday.ee
