Leeds Preview – Goals aplenty becoming the norm?

Any honeymoon period Leeds may have been enjoying has been emphatically quashed following defeats in three of their previous four Premier League games – an eye-catching performance away to Aston Villa, in a 3-0 win fondly remembered for Patrick Bamford’s hat-trick haul, the only bright spot in an otherwise testing period. This after collecting seven points in their first four fixtures, from two wins and a draw.

More disconcerting than the results themselves has been the sheer volume of goals being conceding. We know it is bad when a team is shipping four at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace hadn’t managed more than two goals across their previous 22 top-flight fixtures, and yet it was the second league game running in which The Whites were soundly beaten 4-1, losing at home to Leicester in their preceding fixture.

Meanwhile, in the Championship last season Leeds made Elland Road a fortress, registering more points at home than any other side, losing only three times in West Yorkshire. Lose to Arsenal, however, and Marcelo Bielsa’s men will have equalled that total in just five home games of 2020/21, collecting one of nine available points and losing each of the last two fixtures here since edging out Fulham 4-3 in mid-September.

Arsenal Preview – Toothless tendencies still remain?

Another campaign plagued by inconsistency, perhaps not too dissimilar to that which seen them finish a disappointing eighth in 2019/20 after returning a win rate of just 37% spread across three separate managers, threatens to undermine another league campaign for Arsenal. The Gunners occupy a place in the bottom of the table through eight rounds, having won and lost in equal measure (W4 L4).

The main gripe so far resides in their goals for column, which makes for uninspired reading when considering that they possess one of the best – if not thee best – paid strikers in the league in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Yet the Gabon international, who scored for his country during the international break, has netted just twice in eight league appearances thus far, averaging a paltry 1.3 shots per game.

The toils of their star player are endemic of a team struggling for verve and confidence in attack. Perhaps this is highlighted best by the fact just five teams – with four ranked no higher than 17th in the table – have plundered fewer goals this season than Arsenal, who have lost three of their last four Premier League encounters without impacting the scoreline. The latest a damaging 3-0 loss at the Emirates to Aston Villa.

Leeds Vs Arsenal Betting Advice

It is arguable that the recent break came at the right time for both these sides, offering some badly-needed respite following alarming dips in form, with both having suffered three defeats in four league outings beforehand. However, whereas Leeds have been unsuccessful in striking up a balance between scoring and conceding, for Arsenal it has been the exact opposite issue, looking solid without offering ever up much threat going forward.

Leeds Vs Arsenal – Key Facts:

  • Leeds‘ Premier League home games this season (W1 D1 L2) are averaging 3.8 goals per game, with three of four said matches seeing both teams find the back of the net.
  • Arsenal‘s four away games so far this season (W2 L2) have averaged a modest 2.25 goals per game, with both teams scoring only once despite the Gunners netting in all but one said fixture.
  • No win across the last seven meetings in all competitions for Leeds against Arsenal, with the latter victorious on each of their previous four visits to Elland Road.

If ever a fixture was custom made to coax the best from Arsenal’s forwards, this is it. Games involving Leeds this season are averaging close to four goals a game (3.88), with opponents coming out on top thus far, with 17 goals to the 14 of Leeds. The Whites have conceded three or more on four occasions, meanwhile, so the prospects of Mikel Arteta’s side finally coming out of their shell this weekend are healthy.
