Leeds Preview – Bamford can continue purple patch?

The Whites became the first team all season to prevent Aston Villa from winning in the league when they won handsomely at Villa Park last time out. All of the goals in an emphatic 3-0 win for Marcelo Bielsa’s men coming from striker Patrick Bamford, whose superb hat-trick took him on to six goals for the season and only two behind Tottenham’s in-form Son Heung-min in the early race for the Golden Boot.

Bamford – a 7/4 shot to score anytime on Monday against Leicester City – is available at 80/1 to become the first player in 2020-21 to net two Premier League hat-tricks. Just one of his strikes has come at Elland Road, though. That coming in their 4-3 victory over last season’s Championship play-off winners Fulham, who have struggled since promotion. Leeds have otherwise drawn with Man City and lost to Wolves in West Yorkshire.

Leeds were, however, the better team in each of their home encounters thus far. An impressive feat considering one of those was against Man City while the other a Wolves side expected by many to challenge for the top-six. Moreover, with 12 goals scored through their first six league games, netting 3+ on three occasions, no newly-promoted side has managed more at this stage since Middlesbrough in 1992-93.

Leicester Preview – Jamie Vardy looking as clinical as ever?

For the second week running Leicester City find themselves playing on the Monday, which actually works out rather well for them after their involvement in the Europa League on Thursday. Brendan Rodgers side earning all three points out in Greece against AEK Athens, as goals from Jamie Vardy and Hamza Choudhury ensured a second successive win in the competition which keeps them top of their section.

That midweek success means The Foxes can return to their domestic duties in buoyant mood, keen to consolidate their place inside the Premier League’s top-four ahead of this weekend’s batch of top-flight fixtures. Last time out in the league seen them take on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates, a contest they were fortunate to eke out a 1-0 win in but did so courtesy of Jamie Vardy‘s sixth league goal of the campaign.

Vardy was introduced from the bench in North London but was named as a starter on Thursday, before being handed a breather in the 70th minute. This would suggest the 2019-20 Premier League’s top scorer is set to start at Elland Road, where he will be confident of adding to his five goals from just two away outings this season – netting twice at West Brom and bagging a hat-trick in the 5-2 victory over Man City.

A first Premier League meeting between the sides since April 2004, when the hosts pipped a five-goal thriller at Elland Road to win 3-2, sees sixth-placed Leeds (W3 D1 L2) taking on fourth-in-the-table Leicester (W4 L2). Both sides have shown a ruthlessness to their play this season, netting 12 and 13 respectively, while neither has look assure at the back. So we could be in for a bumpy ride similar to their last meeting here.

Leeds Vs Leicester – Key Facts:

  • Leeds have scored 12 goals through their first six Premier League games, at a rate of two a game, having netted three or more in three different fixtures.
  • Leicester have scored 13 goals after six Premier League games and can also lay claim to scoring three or more on three separate occasions – including five away at Man City.
  • A first competitive meeting since Leicester prevailed 3-1 at home in a 2017 EFL Cup encounter. The Foxes were also 1-0 victors on their most recent trip to Elland Road, during the 2013-14 Championship.

Energy levels could be an issue for the visitors, who weren’t quite at full-strength in midweek but did feature a few first-time regulars. While it is often said that you don’t feel so tired when you’re winning, and Brendan Rodgers will hope this is borne out in West Yorkshire. Leicester have scored in all three away outings (1 BTTS) but are still light on numbers defensively, while Leeds have netted in two of their three at home (2 BTTS).
