Leeds United Preview – Whites striving for a third straight league win?

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Leeds United were unable to sustain their early propensity for seven goal thrillers. The fact they even managed to string together two was fairly remarkable in itself. The first of those came at Anfield, in a 4-3 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Liverpool in their season opener, before edging out fellow promoted side Fulham at Elland Road by the same scoreline.

Last week at Bramall Lane was a victory instead for normality, as Leeds ditched the frenetic for something altogether more measured. The end result was a second successive league win, with a 1-0 scoreline enough to see them climb into seventh in the table, but perhaps equally important was a first clean sheet since promotion. A timely reminder that this side are capable of delivering at both ends of the pitch.

Yet, despite keeping out Sheffield United, there is every chance of another end-to-end encounter unfolding on Saturday. The Whites have scored in all three league games thus far, with their total of eight bettered by only two teams. At the back, though, they continue to allow ample scoring opportunities, conceding on average 2.2 xGA per game, and were hardly watertight last time out: xG SHE 1.71 – 1.32 LED.

Manchester City Preview – Pep determined to avoid another humbling?

Some astonishing records were set at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday. None of which Pep Guardiola will wish to be reminded of ahead of Saturday’s venture to Yorkshire to take on a Leeds side in terrific form under the tutelage of a manager the Man City boss holds in the highest of regards. The question now is, what sort of response are we going to get following their 5-2 humbling at home to Leicester City?

It was the first time a Guardiola team had conceded five times, while it was only the second occasion a team of his had lost its opening home fixture of a league campaign. Leicester executed their game plan to perfection (xG: MNC 1.46 – 3.02 LEI), brutally exploiting a haphazard City defence. Meanwhile, The Foxes’ five-goal haul was as many as Pep’s men had conceded in their previous twelve league games combined.

A free-scoring Leeds is next on the agenda, three days after featuring in the Carabao Cup away to Burnley. It could be business as usual, however, should we witness a similar performance to that at Wolves, when the Cityzens opened their Premier League account for 2020/21 with a dominant display – barring a brief spell in the second half – in their 3-1 victory at Molineux. A sixth successive league win at that time.

Leeds Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

It would be a surprise to some were this clash to pass without a few goals after what we’ve seen from both so far. Leeds have been exhilarating to watch, with a couple of seven-goal epics preceding their narrow success last time out at Sheffield United. As for Man City, their opening two fixtures have returned scorelines of 1-3 and 2-5, looking especially vulnerable in the latter when losing at home to Leicester.

Leeds Vs Man City – Key Facts

  • Marcelo Bielsa has now seen his Leeds team avoid defeat at home in the league (Championship/Premier League) for nine successive matches (W8 D1), in a run which featured seven clean sheets.
  • In last season’s underwhelming Premier League campaign, Man City incurred seven of their nine league defeats away from home (W11 D1 L7).
  • Leeds are hosting Man City for the first time in the Premier League since 2004, having won six of the pair’s nine such meetings (W6 L3) in West Yorkshire.

However, these are two of the most meticulous coaches when it comes to pre-match planning and tactical tweaks. So expect Marcelo Bielsa and Pep Guardiola to have something up their sleeve for the other here. The end result should still be the same, however: goals. Over 3.5 Goals has delivered in two of Leeds’ three league games so far and in both the matches Man City have featured in.
