Preview: Matches involving Leganes returned the least amount of goals in La Liga in 2018-19, while Atletico Madrid’s were not far behind. Therefore anyone expecting fireworks when these two local rivals clash, inside Estadio Municipal de Butarque, could be in for a rude awakening. This same fixture last season did, however, end with a couple of goals scored in a 1-1 draw.

Backing Both Teams To Score at Betfred

Leganes Preview – Pellgrino setting his team out to frustrate once again?

If adventurous and expansive football is what you are after – the thrills-a-minute sort that leaves you on the edge of your seat – then I am afraid you’ve come to the wrong place. Leganes are well-drilled and not lacking in commitment under former Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who was a former defender during his playing career and has done all he can to make his current employers as difficult to beat as humanely possible.

In fairness, Leganes have become a very awkward opponent to face. They don’t lose that often and when they do, rarely is it by a margin greater than the odd goal. Last season, not a single member of the so called ‘big three’ went to the home of Los Pepineros and left with maximum points, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both settling for a share of the points following 1-1 draws. The eventual champions, meanwhile, suffered a more grim fate, as Barcelona lost 2-1 early into the campaign.

So this is certainly a team capable of raising their game against the better sides. On recent evidence, however, it does feel a bigger ask this time around. Leganes’ 1-0 defeat at home to Osasuna on the opening matchday now means they have failed to win their previous five games in La Liga as the home side (D2 L3). Their last win at all, home or away, since the beginning of April was a shock 3-0 triumph away to Sevilla (form since: W1 D3 L5).

Best Leganes Bet: Under 2.5 Match Goals @ 8/15 BetVictor? Goals were often scarce whenever Leganes were involved, but that was especially so as the home side. Just 21% of Leganes home matches in 2018-19 finished with three or more goals, with each of the last nine seeing Under 2.5 Goals land.

Atletico Madrid Preview – Morata to inspire Atleti to gritty win?

Nobody dare accuse Diego Simeone of losing his desire or passion for being manager of Atletico Madrid, with the 49-year-old sprinting down the tunnel in celebratory mood at full-time of last week’s hard-fought win at home to Getafe. It was a match his side dominated in truth, carving out chances equating to 2.33XG whilst restricting the opposition to a mere 0.37. The only goal, meanwhile, came from the forehead of forward Alvaro Morata.

The latter would appear a player reborn back in his native Spain. His goal on the opening weekend took his tally since joining the club in January to seven goals in sixteen league appearances. With Kieran Trippier’s wicked deliveries from out wide to complement his biggest strength, which is his aerial prowess, further goals should be on the horizon. Morata is 4/1 with Bet365 to notch the first goal of the game for the second game running.

However, three points are of more critical importance to Atleti in their mission to secure a first league title since 2014. Last season saw them finish a country mile behind champions Barcelona, with the main reason for their shortcomings being the chasm in away form that separated the top two teams. Diego Simeone’s men matched Barca point-for-point at home (48) but picked up 11 fewer on their travels to finish with a mediocre away record: W7 D5 L5. Meanwhile, they’ve won only one of their last five such fixtures (W1 D1 L3).

Best Atletico Madrid Bet: Atletico Win to Nil @ 8/5 Bet365? When Atletico Madrid were successful in winning league games on the road, more often it was because the defence played an integral role. Six of their seven away victories in La Liga last term were accompanied by a clean sheet, which enhances the appeal of an away win to nil here, up against a side that doesn’t score very many goals.

Leganes V Atletico Madrid Key Facts:

  • In last season’s La Liga, Leganes went unbeaten at home versus Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
  • Atletico Madrid have won one of their previous five away league games (W1 D1 L3).
  • Each of the past three league meetings with Leganes as the home side have ended in draws.

Betting Summary

At home, Leganes are incredibly difficult opponents at the best of times but even more so when the big boys come to town. None of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona or Real Madrid went to Leganes in La Liga last season and left with a winning outcome. An opening matchday defeat to Osasuna, though, did make it five home games without a win for Mauricio Pellgrino’s side (D2 L3).

In what was a scrappy game, Atletico still largely dominated Getafe, winning their opening fixture 1-0 courtesy of Alvaro Morata. Now they are out on the road, which is where their form lagged behind champions Barca last season. Diego Simeone overseen seven away wins altogether (W7 D5 L5), with his side wrapping up the campaign by winning just one of their final five away fixtures (W1 D1 L3).

In none of the past three seasons have Atletico registered a win away to Leganes in La Liga, which is why Los Rojiblancos are generously priced this weekend. A team packed with as much star quality as theirs would be a lot shorter otherwise. However, with performances at home from Leganes deteriorating recently, there is enough creativity and guile in the visiting side to suggest that frustrating sequence could be broken on Sunday.
