Preview: The 2020-21 FA Cup has been whittled down to the last eight teams, seven of which hail from the Premier League. Sunday’s clash at King Power Stadium is one of three all-to-flight ties and sees Leicester City seeking to end a wretched run against Manchester United.

Leicester – Foxes & Iheanacho finding form?

A top-four finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup semi-final would represent progress for Leicester under Brendan Rodgers, a season on from a fifth-place finish in the former and a quarter-final appearance in the latter. The Foxes came up short at this same stage last time around, losing out to Chelsea who won 1-0 in a contest played out inside Wembley, and meet high-quality opposition once again on Sunday.

Leicester certainly haven’t enjoyed their recent encounters with Man Utd. The Red Devils prevailing in nine of the subsequent thirteen meetings, including four of the most recent five, since the Foxes won an eight-goal thriller in the league 5-3 in September 2014. Brendan Rodgers’ side did, however, hold their own here at King Power Stadium when the sides shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw on Boxing Day.

Recent results have also perked up. Last Sunday’s rout of Sheffield United, thrashing the Premier League’s bottom side 5-0 at home, made it back-to-back wins having previously gone three without one (D1 L2). Jamie Vardy laid on a hat-trick of assists but has one goal in his last 15 appearances. Step forward Kelechi Iheanacho. The Nigerian has netted in three successive games including a hat-trick last weekend.

Manchester United – Away form on the decline?

Only Arsenal, who extended their dominance of this competition by lifting the trophy for a 14th time in 2019/20, can better Manchester United for FA Cup honours. The Red Devils have been crowned FA Cup winners on twelve occasions, most recently in 2015/16 when coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace, but only once in the last seventeen editions of the world’s oldest existing cup competition.

Last season, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side were dumped out in the round they are bidding to reach on Sunday, losing to the same side who accounted for upcoming opponents Leicester the round prior. That team being Chelsea who, as we all know, are in splendid form right now. However, United haven’t been too shabby either and bring a 13-game unbeaten sequence (W5 D8) to King Power Stadium.

Earlier in the season, United were pleasing supporters and neutrals – if there even are any – alike with their swashbuckling style away from home. They are currently a shadow of that side, however, going from averaging 2.4 goals per game in winning 8 of their opening 10 away league games to drawing four on the spin, three of them 0-0, prior to an outstanding collective effort in their 2-0 victory in the Manchester derby.

Leicester City Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

A premature exit from the Europa League should benefit Leicester who are already thin on numbers and could do without the accumulation of fatigue or, worse still, further injuries. Brendan Rodgers has recently had to make do without James Maddison and Harvey Barnes but will appreciate the fact there are seven days between this game and their last, a 5-0 rout of Sheffield United that made it back-to-back wins.

Leicester City Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Four of the last five meetings between these sides ended in a victory for Manchester United, who were only denied a fifth when Leicester salvaged a 2-2 draw on Boxing Day.
  • Goals could be at a premium. 14 of the last 19 Leicester home games did not produce both teams scoring, as was the case in 6 of the last 8 when Man Utd were away.
  • Man Utd have drawn six of the last nine away fixtures domestically. However, there hasn’t been a draw in a Leicester home game since these teams did so on Boxing Day (W5 L3 thereafter).

Unlike their opposite numbers, Manchester United were involved in midweek with the Europa League. That means another short turnaround for a squad teetering on the brink of burnout – they’ve scored more than one goal in two of their last seven domestic matches, albeit remaining unbeaten throughout. A taxing Thursday night in Milan is therefore ample cause for concern up against a host that should be fresher.
