Preview: Saturday’s clash in the north of France focuses on the battle for Europe. Will Lens, unbeaten in front of their own fans since September, be able to put home advantage at Stade Bollaert-Delelis to good use against a visiting Marseille seeking their fifth successive Ligue 1 away victory?

Lens – Les Sang et Or won’t surrender unbeaten home run easily?

A six match winless run to end the first half of the Ligue 1 season had threatened to undermine all of RC Lens’ tiresless work until that stage, having spent pretty much the entirety of 2021-22 so far in the European places. But they have begun the new year with renewed vigour, registering successive league victories for the first time since the beginning of October in beating in-form Rennes and lowly St Etienne.

The challenge now for Franck Haise and his team is winning three consecutive league games, something they last managed in September 2020. Their gung-ho nature – nine of their past eleven Ligue 1 matches have seen three or more goals, with both teams on target in eight of these – suggests it won’t be easy against a Marseille side that has played a game less but are three places and fourth points better off in third.

Key Stat: No Ligue 1 team in the top-half of the standings has allowed more goals to be conceded than the 29 in 21 games so far of Lens. Rather unsurprisingly, Lens have recorded only five clean sheets this season, though four were as the home side.

Marseille – Sampaoli targeting fifth-straight away win to nil?

A fourth successive Ligue 1 victory for Nice last time around ensured Marseille, held 1-1 at home by the ten men of Lille in their latest outing, were demoted to third ahead of Saturday’s awkward-looking trip to Stade Bollaert-Delelis. L’OM were also held at this ground on their most recent visit, surrendering a 2-0 half-time lead to draw 2-2, but retain a positive record overall having not lost there since 2009 (W2 D1).

Should they return to winning ways at this ground, they will finish the day back in second ahead of Nice’s visit to Metz the following day. Jorge Sampaoli must retain the utmost confidence in his side completing their objective after seeing them produce the strongest away form in Ligue 1 this season (based on points-per-game; W6 D2 L1), winning the last four said matches without so much as conceding a goal.

Key Stat: The goals rarely flow when Marseille are in town. 10 of the past 11 Ligue 1 encounters involving L’OM returned fewer than three goals, while this was the case in all of their previous nine away from home in the competition.

Lens Vs Marseille Betting Advice

Just six of 20 Marseille league matches this term produced Over 2.5 Goals. Among them the meeting at the Stade Velodrome between these sides, a five goal thriller that Lens won despite throwing away a 2-0 lead at one point in the contest. Meanwhile only two of Lens’ last 11 Ligue 1 games didn’t see at least three goals, suggesting a repeat isn’t necessarily out of the question in a fixture that ended 2-2 last season.

Lens Vs Marseille – Key Facts:

  • Since their promotion to Ligue 1 ahead of the 2020-21 season, Lens have remained unbeaten versus Marseille (W2 D1). Last season’s corresponding fixture ended 2-2.
  • So far this season, Lens have scored eight more (36 vs 28) yet conceded on 13 more occasions (29 vs 16) than Marseille, highlighting the contrasting styles of the sides.
  • The last five drawn encounters between the clubs in Ligue 1 were scoring draws, including their meeting at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in February 2021.

Lens boast one win in three at home (W1 D2) but came up against stiff opposition in Angers, PSG and Rennes. They are unbeaten in six at their Stade Bollaert-Delelis, which should stand them in good stead ahead of the visit from a Marseille side seeking to win five consecutive Ligue 1 away games without conceding. With both teams boasting such strong cases then, don’t be surprised if neither ultimately prevail.
