German Bundesliga
Pick: Bayer Leverkusen to WIN
Odds: 13/10

(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 21st April 2021)

Preview: With four rounds remaining, these are two teams very much with plenty still at stake. A win for either would do their causes the world of good, with Leverkusen clinging on to sixth as Frankfurt fend off the ongoing pursuit of Dortmund in the tussle for Champions League placings.

Bayer Leverkusen – Wolf inspiring steady improvement?

To the surprise of probably nobody, Leverkusen (W13 D8 L9) were finally beaten under new manager Hannes Wolf during the midweek round. Wolf, installed on an interim basis to oversee what remains of this season, had previously collected seven of nine available points since assuming the managerial hot seat vacated by Peter Bosz, but saw his encouraging start curtailed by champions-elect Bayern on Tuesday.

With previous stints as head coach at Hamburg and Stuttgart, Wolf isn’t exactly inexperienced. The 40-year-old will be enthused with how these players have reacted to his early days, too. In fairness, his tenure thus far has been lenient, with somewhat expected victories coming against struggling duo FC Koln and recently relegated Schalke. Bookending a dour goalless draw away at mid-table Hoffenheim.

Die Werkself are a perfect two wins from two, though, here at BayArena under Wolf. As many as the team managed across their previous eight Bundesliga home games (W2 D2 L4). They’ve also tightened up defensively (three conceded in four matches). That 3-0 success over Koln last time out at home, meanwhile, producing a first clean sheet inside their own ground since Matchday 9’s 0-0 draw with Hertha Berlin.

Leverkusen Win & Both To Score

Eintracht Frankfurt – Eagles firmly on course for top-four?

A relatively routine 2-0 victory at home to poor travellers Augsburg, who slumped to a seventh Bundesliga defeat in their past eight away matches, meant Frankfurt (W15 D11 L4) tightened their grip on the Champions League places. It was the perfect response to last weekend’s humbling in Gladbach, going down 4-0 to the side who has poached their current coach, Adi Hutter, for the start of next season.

With only four games to negotiate and a healthy buffer on fifth-place Dortmund, it would take some collapse from here for the club not to secure their return to Europe’s premier club competition. Particularly on the back of some excellent recent form. The midweek victory, albeit against middling opposition, made it four wins in five Bundesliga outings, having lost just twice since the turn of the year (W12 D3 L2 in 2021).

Furthermore, last week’s blank brought an end to 23 consecutive league games without failing to score. This knack of finding the net – with the majority either being assisted by winger Filip Kostic (12 assists) or scored by goal-getter Andre Silva (25 goals) – will hopefully serve them well in Leverkusen on Saturday. Die Adler mustering a paltry four goals across seven visits (D1 L6) since last seen winning here in 2013.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Frankfurt Betting Advice

The recent improvements we’ve bore witness to from Bayer Leverkusen under interim coach Hannes Wolf will be scrutinised this weekend by a Frankfurt side in no mood to relinquish their stranglehold on a Champions League berth. The latter are the ones who have their work cut out, though, should their recent record around these parts hold any bearing on the outcome of Saturday’s contest inside BayArena.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Frankfurt – Key Facts:

  • It has been more than seven years since Frankfurt last celebrated victory in Leverkusen, scoring only three in six subsequent Bundesliga visits having lost each of the last five.
  • However, Frankfurt have now scored in 24 of their last 25 Bundesliga matches. Die Adler winning four of their past five league games, but only one of the last four away (D1 L2).
  • Since a change of manager, Leverkusen have delivered vastly improved form (W2 D1 L1) including two wins from two at BayArena under interim coach Hannes Wolf.

Since a 1-0 win in December 2013, Frankfurt have scored twice and registered a single point in six Bundesliga away meetings with Leverkusen, who have won each of the last five encounters on their patch. Saturday’s hosts are also improving as the season draws to a close, winning both home games under Hannes Wolf, whereas the visitors are looking to defy a disappointing return of four points from their last four away games having lost the latest of those 4-0 in Gladbach.
