Lille Prediction – Can Lille continue good form at home?
A 2-1 win on the opening day of the new French Ligue 1 season was a great start for Wednesday night’s hosts, Lille, but a defeat followed in their next match when they suffered a 1-0 loss on the road at Amiens, so the hosts may well be looking forward to returning to more familiar surroundings for this clash against Saint-Etienne.
Last season’s runners-up will be looking to go one step better this time around, but to do so, they’ll need to usurp PSG into top spot and that’s a tall order for any team in the French top flight. Perhaps more realistically, Lille will be happy to grab 2nd place again and that will guarantee Champions League football again for next term.
Lille lost just twice on home turf at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy last season and it became a veritable fortress for the hosts as they head into this encounter against Saint-Etienne having won their last 5 home matches on the trot in Ligue 1.
Indeed, 8 wins from their last 10 matches at home should give Lille plenty of reason to be confident of grabbing all three points here, but it is still early days. With the departure of former forward, Pepe, to Arsenal, the goalscoring responsibilities will fall to the likes of Bamba, Osimhen and Remy.
Saint-Etienne Prediction – Can St Etienne upset Lille?
Wednesday night’s visitors, Saint-Etienne, finished in 4th place at the end of last season’s Ligue 1 campaign but I daresay Ghislain Printat’s side will be keen to make a top 3 finish this time around which would see the visitors enter the Champions League at the qualifying rounds stage.
Again, form at home for Saint-Etienne last season was solid enough as they lost just 4 matches at their Stade Geoffroy-Guichard throughout last term, but an away record of 6-7-6 25/27 will probably need an improvement this time around if they’re to improve upon last season’s 4th place finish.
Saint-Etienne have made a solid start to this new season though as the visitors have captured a 2-1 win away at Dijon which was followed by a 1-1 draw at home with Brest last time out. They’ve also suffered just 1 defeat out of their last 12 matches in Ligue 1, which was a 1-0 loss at home to Montpellier who finished in 6th place at the end of last term.
