Lille Preview – Clean sheet or bust for Les Douges?

For the second time since the season got underway in mid-August, Lille (2nd – W5 D3 L0) were denied the victory. On this particular occasion, however, they only had themselves to blame, leaving too much to do in Thursday’s Europa League encounter once falling 2-0 behind in France against Scottish champions Celtic. A spirited second-half showing ensuring a point was salvaged from the contest inside Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Les Douges have now drawn back-to-back games, having shared the spoils in Nice last time out in Ligue 1. That game also came immediately after playing in Europe, and would also see them fall behind before rallying, in what was a laboured effort away to Patrick Viera’s men (xG: NIC 1.12 – 0.64 LIL). They were perhaps thankful that the opposition had also been in European action days earlier.

Sunday’s opponents Lyon, however, will be fresher for their absence from continental competition this season, which could spell big trouble for Christophe Galtier’s unbeaten side (W5 D3). It is also no coincidence that so far this season, all five Ligue 1 victories have been accompanied by a clean sheet. They failed to win on either of the three occasion they conceded, meanwhile, away to Nice and Marseille and at home to Rennes.

Lyon Preview – Visitors unlikely to be held at bay?

With no European football this season, Lyon (6th – W3 D4 L1) can have no excuse should they not finish above the likes of Marseille, Nice, Rennes and Lille, who should rival them for a top-three finish but must all find a way of managing more demanding schedules in the campaign ahead. The latter of whom, Lille, they meet on Sunday, a game which should they win would be the second big statement of intent from Les Gones in as many games.

The other being last week’s 4-1 hammering of Monaco, who are another club hell-bent on returning to European competition. A second successive win from Rudi Garcia’s side, who had edged out Strasbourg 3-2 on the road in the preceding round. Meanwhile, a return of six points and seven goals is a considerable improvement on four points and three goals accrued through their previous five Ligue 1 fixtures.

Clearly, then, Lyon have stumbled upon some meaningful form ahead of Sunday’s clash with Lille, who are still to lose a match in any competition this season. Les Gones will be confident of at least hitting the back of the Stade Pierre-Mauroy nets – which usually spells trouble for the home side – having scored in three straight away league games since a goalless stalemate in Bordeaux on Matchday 2.

Lille Vs Lyon Betting Advice

So far this season the formula has been simple: Lille win when they don’t concede and draw when they do. All five victories in Ligue 1 were ‘to nil’, including the last three played here at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. However the better sides have tended to breach them, after drawing 1-1 with Marseille, Nice and Rennes. Fairly ominous, then, ahead of hosting a Lyon side averaging a healthy 1.75 goals-per-game.

Lille Vs Lyon – Key Facts

  • The only team in Ligue 1 still to taste defeat in 2020-21, Lille secured all five league victories this term by keeping a clean sheet, doing so in three of four home fixtures.
  • Clean sheets have been scarce for Lyon, though, whose eight Ligue 1 encounters this season would feature both teams among the goals on six occasions
  • Lille won home and away against Lyon in Ligue 1 last season, and by the same 1-0 scoreline. However, those games halted a run of five successive meetings in which both teams had scored.

According to Infolgol’s Expected Points table, Lyon rank higher (2nd) than Lille (5th). Only defending champions PSG are performing to a higher level than Rudi Garcia’s troops, who should be fresher for not having played a competitive fixture in midweek. The same could not be said for Lille, held at home by Celtic in a 2-2 draw on Thursday, in what was a strong line-up named by Christophe Galtier. Therefore, don’t expect the hosts to have it all their own way.
