Lille Preview – A must-win encounter for Les Douges?

A single goal in either half was all Lille (4th – W12 D4 L8) needed to overcome an out-of-form Angers last time out. Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen opened the scoring with his 12th Ligue 1 goal of the season before Renato Sanches capped off a dominant away performance by notching his second since arriving in the summer. That a third Ligue 1 victory on the bounce, as their push for a top-three finish gathers momentum.

Les Douges are now on the cusp of the Champions League places, trailing Rennes in third by only a point – though the gap between them and the team in second is still nine. Marseille are that team, which means an opportunity to take a chunk out of that deficit come Sunday. Only PSG would claim more points from matches contested at home this season than Christophe Galtier’s men (29 out of 36), with the Parisiens also the only team to have beaten them at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in 2019-20 (W9 D2 L1).

There are several angles to support a home win, too. Six of their nine victories in said matches were ‘to nil’, including the latest: a 1-0 scoreline against the side directly above them, Rennes. On the three occasions they won but couldn’t keep a clean sheet, the scoreline each time was 2-1. Lille To Nil is 13/5 with Boylesports, while the 2-1 Correct Score is a best-priced 9/1 at BetVictor. Meanwhile, nine of Osimhen’s 12 league goals were netted at home.

Marseille Preview – Resilient L’OM need to put cup exit behind them?

A return to the Champions League is looking more and more likely with every passing week. An eight-point cushion now separates them from the team in third, with Marseille (2nd – W14 D7 L3) comfortably stationed in second after a quite remarkable thirteen game sequence without losing in Ligue 1. The majority of that run comprising of victories, ten no less, although the latest was a lot more nervy than most had predicted.

Hosting the side rooted to the bottom of the table and almost certainly destined for relegation, L’OM appeared as close to banker material as could possibly be and yet struggled throughout, reliant on riding their luck on more than one occasion. Visiting Toulouse had lost 13 of the last 14 league fixtures but departed the Stade Velodrome as the better side according to xG (MAR 0.87 – 1.34). Another abject display was to soon follow.

Andre Villas-Boas watched his players labour in the Coupe de France on Wednesday, as his Marseille side were beaten 1-0 at Lyon. That defeat does simplify the rest of the campaign for the Portuguese tactician, however, knowing the only incentive between now and May is the league and maintaining a stranglehold of second. On a more positive note, that goal in midweek marked only the second time this team had conceded in eight league and cup games, having not done so at all in Ligue 1 for almost seven hours.

Lille Vs Marseille Betting Advice

Not the easiest of tasks splitting these two. Lille are much more dependable on home soil, losing once there all season – and that was against the best team in the country, PSG. Marseille are capable of matching them, though, with their record away from home bettered only by that same best team in the country. The latter are also unbeaten in the league for thirteen games, a fine run that they will be doing everything to extend beyond this weekend.

Lille Vs Marseille – Key Facts:

  • Lille would claim maximum points in four of the last five home matches, with all four by a one-goal margin.
  • Marseille have kept five consecutive clean sheets in Ligue 1 and conceded only one goal across their last six away (W4 D2).
  • Prior to losing 3-0 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in 2018-19, Marseille were unbeaten in four visits to Lille in the league (W3 D1).

It would be a surprise were defences not to come out on top on Sunday. Lille have kept seven clean sheets in twelve Ligue 1 home games this season while Marseille are only averaging one goal conceded per away game, not to mention going nearly the last seven hours of football without their defence being breached. In addition, L’OM’s record as the visiting side in this fixture certainly catches the eye, with three wins and only loss in the past five trips. Marseille Draw No Bet is 29/20 with BetVictor.
