Lille Preview – Midweek exertions affecting domestic displays?

A successful outing in the Europa League on Thursday, coming from behind to beat Czech outfit Sparta Prague 2-1 here at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, earned Lille (W6 D5 L1) safe passage into the competition’s Round of 32. It has also given head coach Christophe Galtier the luxury of making wholesale changes for next week’s final group game, which will be away to Celtic, with only top spot left to be decided.

Attentions can now switch to reigniting a faltering domestic campaign, having won once in five Ligue 1 outings (W1 D3 L1), beginning with a fixture on Sunday that is fraught with danger. Les Douges were thumped 5-1 in the sole meeting between the sides last season. Admittedly that was on the road, but they haven’t fared any better here with three defeats on the spin since a 4-1 success in April 2016.

Arresting that alarming head-to-head record increases in importance this season, with the battle for European places as fierce as it has ever been in France. It is Lille, though, exhibiting greater levels of consistency thus far – their one loss and eight goals conceded after twelve matchdays both league-leading figures in Ligue 1. Moreover, they remain one of three teams yet to lose at home so far this term (W4 D2).

Monaco Preview – Niko Kovac seeking fifth league win in a row?

Four successive victories, scoring two or more in each and averaging three goals per game, has Monaco (W7 D2 L3) up in fourth and within striking distance of leaders PSG. The latter also the only side in Ligue 1 this season to better Niko Kovac’s men in the attacking third, with the burgeoning relationship between Wissam Ben Yeddar and Kevin Volland really coming to the fore in those recent spare of victories.

Monaco have scored on at least two occasions in seven league games so far this season, and found the net three times in a further four. Included in that are three of those aforementioned victories, against Bordeaux (4-0), PSG (3-2) and in last week’s comfortable home outing with Nimes (3-0). Stade Brest, in a 1-0 scoreline on Matchday 6, the only side thus far to have shut out the principality side in 2020/21.

That latter result was on the road though, which is generally where Monaco have encountered most of their problems this season. Boasting the best home record in the division, with five wins and no losses, Les Monegasques have instead been erratic away from their Stade Louis II. Victory in Nice on their most recent away outing just their second of the campaign (W2 L3), halting a run of three successive away defeats.

Lille Vs Monaco Betting Advice

With no European football to contend with this season, Monaco will be fresh for Sunday’s trip to northern France, where they will face a Lille side who needed a late brace from substitute Burak Yilmaz to see off Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday. The latter’s record in Ligue 1 when coming off a European game is extremely disconcerting as well, failing to record a single win in five attempts (D3 L1).

Lille Vs Monaco – Key Facts:

  • Among three sides still to lose a home Ligue 1 game in 2020/21, Lille are nonetheless in question form after one win in five (W1 D3 L1) and no win after playing in Europe (D3 L1).
  • Monaco are Ligue 1’s form side at the present time, scoring 12 goals across their current four-match winning sequence in the league.
  • Recent history favours the visiting side meanwhile, Monaco having won 4-1, 4-0 and 1-0 on their last three visits to Lille.

The edge in terms of fitness certainly appears to favour the visitors then, who also happen to boast the stronger form too, having won their past four league matches whilst averaging three goals across this sequence. That spells trouble for a Lille side boasting one win in five in Ligue 1 (W1 D3 L1) and who have beaten the lesser lights at home this season but struggled against their main rivals (1-1 vs Lyon & Rennes).
