Lille Preview – Can Lille make home advantage count against the leaders?

It was a memorable campaign for Lille last year, one of the most significant in their history, culminating in that historic title success over PSG. The chances of sustaining that level of performance let alone retaining the title were always likely. Christian Galtier decided to leave the club on a high and whilst they have probably kept most of their key players – more than they would have expected – they have not been anything like the same group from the previous season.

Intead, Jocelyn Gourvennec is attempting to ensure the current champions can at least qualify for European football next season. Lille are currently outside the top 10 but only two points adrift of fifth place Rennes. The 10 point gap between themselves and third place Nice is probably too big a gap to be in with a realistic chance of Champions League qualification at this stage.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Saturday 5 February)

Lille did suffer their first defeat in 10 league games with the loss away to Brest in their most recent league match. Before that they had won won four and drawn five. It was hardly excellent form but they were at least cutting the losses out which plagued them earlier in the season (five in their first 12 matches).

Jonathan David will return from a productive international break with Canada but his club form has not been so hot of late. Despite being on 12 for the season, it’s now just two in his last eight league matches.

PSG Preview – Will PSG continue their procession to the Ligue 1 title by taking all three points from this one?

The whispers surrounding Mauricio Pochettino’s future in PSG are growing louder. Despite having only been at the club for a year, it looks increasingly likely that he will be departing this summer. Unable to secure the Ligue 1 title last season, it has been an uphill battle for the former Spurs boss attempting to get this unique collection of players performing in a system and style of his own.

If he does leve, Poch will almost certainly do so as a French champions. PSG are 10 points clear and have played a game less than second place Marseille.

The most alarming thing for the rest of the competition is they have not even had to be at their best. The signing of Lionel Messi has not brought about anything like the promise with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe alongside. And defeat in the French Cup midweek following a goalless draw at home to Nice further highlighted how disjointed this team is at the moment.

PSG are unbeaten in their last 13 in the league (eight wins and five draws) with their only defeat of the campaign being a 2-0 defeat away to Rennes.

Lille vs PSG Betting Advice

This game will not have anything like the same meaning as the clashes last season but there will be plenty of pride at stake. Lille, as current champions, will want to show they can compete, whilst PSG will be looking to take another step towards what is appearing to be an inevitable title win.

This has been a challenge venue for them in recent years, though, winning only once in the last four.

Key Facts –  Lille vs PSG Betting Tip

  • It is now nine unbeaten at home for Lille in the league, winning five of those
  • PSG’s have lost just one of their last 19 away games in Ligue 1 but have drawn their last three
  • The Parisians have won on just one of their last four visits to this stadium

There is still an imbalance in how PSG attack but individuals often make the difference domestically. Seven of Lille’s last 10 home matches have seen both teams scoring, as has been the case in each of PSG’s last five. Take both teams to find the net in this one.
