The League Two play-off semi-finals get underway on Saturday afternoon with Lincoln City taking on Exeter City at Sincil Bank with the hosts side looking to continue their solid form coming into this clash on home turf.
Despite two recent defeats away from home at Port Vale and Accrington Stanley, Lincoln’s form at Sincil Bank has been very solid indeed with just one defeat from their last 14 matches, which was a surprising 4-1 loss to bottom half outfit, Crewe Alexandra.
However, this just appears to be a blip on an otherwise impressive run of results which have seen The Imps record wins over the likes of Accrington Stanley and Newport County as well as gaining points off Notts County and Wycombe Wanderers.
Lincoln ended the League Two season with a home record of 12-8-3 38/23 which includes winning three of their last five with victories over Grimsby Town, today’s opponents Exeter City and Colchester United. The forward trio of Green (13 goals), Palmer and Rhead (8 goals apiece) should cause a few problems today.
Exeter City come into this clash also in reasonable form as The Grecians have suffered just two defeats from their last ten matches overall, but perhaps one of these losses, which was at Lincoln City back in March, may give the home side a slight edge here.
Exeter were narrowly edged out by Wycombe Wanderers for third place as the west country outfit finished four points adrift of The Chairboys, which may also be another psychological factor to consider ahead of this important first leg.
In addition, Exeter’s away form hasn’t exactly been totally convincing throughout this campaign with a record of 9-4-10 30/35 at the end of the season which included four defeats from their last nine on the road.
Therefore, I believe Lincoln City might just edge this one.
