UEFA Nations League
Pick: Turkey Win & Over 2.5 Goals

Preview: In what looks another huge mismatch, can Turkey make the difference of 95 places between the nations in the FIFA Rankings tell in Vilnius? With no previous match ups to go on, though, in some ways Lithuania have nothing to fear as they attempt to rectify another lethargic start in the competition.

Lithuania – Defeats keep on coming for ‘Rinktime’?

The Lithuanians stayed true to form with a 2-0 loss at home to Luxembourg on Matchday 1, a result which means they have lost ‘to nil’ in all three UEFA Nations League opening fixtures since the competition was introduced in 2018. They will hope for a similar outcome to 2020, though. Then, a 2-0 home loss to Kazakhstan was followed by a 1-0 win away to Albania, who were the highest ranked member of their group.

Turkey are comfortably the highest ranked team in this group. However, with a staggering 95 places separating these two teams, Lithuanian’s chances of causing a repeat seem speculative at best. After all, this is a team that has lost 12 of its past 15 international matches (D2 L1) and not preserved their clean sheet in any of 19 fixtures since that aforementioned triumph against Albania, in September 2020.

Key Stat: All of Lithuanian’s six previous losses were without scoring, while they’ve now found the net in just 53% of their UEFA Nations League matches so far.

Turkey – Crescent Stars quality will shine?

Standing out like a sore thumb in League C are Turkey. A nation ranked 43 as of March 2022, with that the highest among the 16 teams competing in the third tier of this competition. This after successive last place finishes in League B placed them in rather unflattering company. However, their superior quality was laid bare on Matchday 1 as they convincingly dispatched the Faroe Islands 4-0 in Istanbul.

Although they won’t be able to boast home advantage on Tuesday, they’re nevertheless expected to make light work of more modest opposition. The Crescent Stars will create a small piece of history should they do so, having never managed more than one win in either of their past two UNL campaigns. Moreover, victory in Vilnius would represent only their second away from home in the competition (W1 D2 L2).

Key Stat: On Matchday 1, Turkey registered only their second ever clean sheet in the UEFA Nations League, in what was their 11th fixture (W3 D3 L5).

Lithuania Vs Turkey Betting Advice

After making extremely light work of the Faroe Islands first time out in League C Group 1, Turkey are once again expected to be the dominant force on Matchday 2. The Crescent Stars have never faced their Tuesday night opposition before but can make a gap of 95 places between them in the latest FIFA Rankings show in Vilnius, where Lithuania were easily beaten 2-0 by Luxembourg three days ago.

Lithuania Vs Turkey – Key Facts:

  • A first ever meeting between Lithuania and Turkey sees sides ranked 138 and 43 respectively – a difference of 95 places – do battle in what appears an obvious mismatch.
  • Lithuania took their record to an unflattering W2 D2 L9 in the UEFA Nations League with a 2-0 home defeat to Luxembourg on Matchday 1. Their 12th loss across their last 15 international games (D2 L1).
  • Turkey won their opening UEFA Nations League match for the first time when beating Faroe Islands 4-0 on Matchday 1. It was their fifth victory in a row to feature three or more goals in the match.

Lithuanian’s last six losses were ‘to nil’. However, Turkey are yet to win with a clean sheet in 11 UEFA Nations League matches to date, while it is difficult investing a huge amount of faith in a Turkey team whose only defensive shutouts across their past 13 matches were against Faroe Islands and Gibraltar (twice). The safer alternative, therefore, is Turkey & Over 2.5 Goals, which returned a winner in their last five victories.
