Liverpool can continue fine start

FA Cup & League Cup Tips

Wednesday 26th September 1945hrs Liverpool v Chelsea Football – England – EFL Cup The EFL Cup in England is not regarded as a priority for any of the top clubs in comparisons to other targets, especially in the early stages of the competition but we get a clash of two of the biggest on Wednesday – one of whom will take a step closer to Wembley come full time. There are big games ahead for both of these clubs, particularly Liverpool who have Champions League commitments to contend with so we may not see either at full strength but it still promises to be a cracker. Continue reading for a match preview of Liverpool versus Chelsea and a selected best betting tip.

It’s been a fantastic start to the season for Liverpool with six straight wins to kickstart their Premier League campaign and a memorable 3-2 win at home to PSG in their opening Champions League fixture last midweek. Saturday’s routine win over Southampton was achieved with a number of changes made from the previous couple of games and we can expect further changes on Wednesday for the visit of Chelsea in the cup. Jurgen Klopp was active in the summer transfer window to strengthen the whole squad in order to compete domestically and in Europe, and this is one of the busiest periods of the season. Following Wednesday’s game the Reds will travel to face the same opponent in the League on Saturday before an away game against Napoli in the Champions League and then playing host to champions Manchester City a week on Sunday. It’s four massive fixtures and they’ll be aiming to win them all, but there’s no doubt that tomorrow’s game is the least significant due to the competition. That said, Liverpool are riding the crest of a wave just now and will want to continue building their confidence – and lets face it, anytime they face Chelsea they are desperate to win.

We didn’t really know what to expect from Chelsea this season with the soap opera surrounding their managerial rumbling on for much longer than would have been ideal. It didn’t leave Maurizio Sarri with a lot of time to shape his squad for the coming season but it’s been an excellent start in the circumstances. Although there 100% record in the league came to an end at the weekend, the Blues remain unbeaten and are only a couple of points behind Liverpool in the Premier League. They also picked up a useful 1-0 win away to PAOK in their opening Europa League game so confidence will be increasing game by game as the former Napoli manager attempts to get this group of players comfortable in his system. Like their opponents on Wednesday it’s going to be a hectic period of games against some big rivals with Manchester United to come in just under a month following this double header with Liverpool. There’s a suggestion that their start to the season has been flattering due to playing some ‘easier’ games but we’ll definitely get an idea of their title credentials after their next half dozen games. A win at Anfield would be a perfect starting point.

Liverpool v Chelsea Betting Tip

I’m sure if you offered both Klopp and Sarri the option of winning just one of this double header then they would choose Saturday’s game in the league such is their aspirations of winning the title but they’ll also know that a win would see them that step closer to what remains the first piece of silverware of the season. Liverpool have not won a trophy since the 2012 League Cup and know that the pressure is on them this season to win something. Chelsea, on the other hand, are still considered to be behind both Liverpool and City in terms of their respective chances of winning the league and may look upon this competition and the FA Cup as their best hopes in Sarri’s first season. Either way I expect we’ll see a number of changes to the starting elevens as the managers use their squads.

The last time these two met in the EFL/League Cup was the semi final in 2015 and it was Chelsea who edged through on aggregate after a couple of very close encounters. Liverpool have home advantage on this occasion and have only been beaten once at Anfield since the beginning of last season – that, incidentally, came in the FA Cup. There will be plenty looking to take on a changed Liverpool team but I’m not one of them. I’ve been really impressed with their start to the season and they now have quality options in reserve – even with expectant changes I fancy them to be in the draw for the next round – it may also give them a psychological boost ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge in the league on Saturday.
