Sunday afternoon brings us two local derbies of significant importance to all four teams involved, starting with the merseyside clash between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield.
Liverpool come into this encounter on the back of a couple of high-scoring games as they saw off Brighton 5-1 away from home in the Premier League and then followed that up with a 7-0 trashing of Spartak Moscow at Anfield during the week in the Champions League.
It’s a return to league action this Sunday though against an Everton side who have been hurting for the majority of this campaign so far, and undoubtedly have a point to prove to the red half of the mersey. But Liverpool have been in blistering form of late, scoring goals almost at will as they’ve collected five wins from their last six in the Premiership, with Mohamed Salah responsible for a large chunk of these.
Everton make the short journey to Anfield with a little more belief and confidence than they would have if this local derby had come a couple of weeks or so earlier. Following Ronald Koeman’s departure, The Toffees gave former player David Unsworth a run as caretaker-manager, but it was always going to be a temporary appointment, despite a 4-0 win over West Ham.
Enter Sam Allardyce back from retirement, and his presence has immediately lifted the blue half of Liverpool as his new side registered a 2-0 home win over Huddersfield Town and then recorded a convincing 3-0 win away at Apollon in the Europa League.
It was too little too late for Everton on the european front however, but they now turn their attentions to the Premier League where they sit in mid-table, but will now go in search of their first away win of the season in order to improve an overall record of 0-3-4 5/16.
With Liverpool’s free-scoring but unreliable defence along with Everton’s resurgence, I’ll back both teams to score here.
