Liverpool can get a positive result against City

Champions League Tips

Wednesday 4th April 2018 Kick off 1945hrs Liverpool v Manchester City Football – Europe – Champions League Manchester City and Liverpool have been the two most entertaining sides in this season’s Premier League with their two meetings against each other resulting in 12 goals being scored. The current head to head stands at one win apiece but with a semi final place in the Champions League up for grabs, something will have to give over the next week. Man City – favourites for the whole competition – will be most people’s fancy to progress but Liverpool remain the only Premier League team to defeat Pep Guardiola’s men this season and have plenty of weapons in which to hurt them. It’s all set up to be a classic two-legged affair beginning at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool have won the European Cup/Champions League on five occasions with their most recent triumph coming in 2005. Since then, they have reached another final two years later before making the semi final stage followed by a quarter final appearance in the proceeding two campaigns. It means it is now verging on 10 years since the Reds last made this stage although the club did make the final of the Europa League in 2016 under Klopp. It’s a long time for a club the size of Liverpool and with their rich history at Europe’s top table, their supporters will feel getting to this stage is long overdue. They brushed aside Porto in the previous round but could hardly have received a more difficult draw in the last eight – although they will feel confident of troubling the runaway Premier League leaders. That confidence stems from the form of their excellent forward three, especially Mohammed Salah who scored yet again at the weekend and another crucial goal at that. He scored the decisive goal the last time the clubs met in January and will be hugely important over the two legs of this tie.

Man City have been breath-taking this season and proven to be far too good for the other clubs in England’s top flight. Following their win over Everton at the weekend they can now seal the Premier League title on Saturday when squaring off against the other half of Manchester on Saturday evening. That will take care of itself, however, as Guardiola and his men focus solely on what is ahead of them tomorrow. Like Liverpool, City had few problems in disposing of their opponents in the previous round but they would not have been overly happy in drawing Liverpool either. Not only is it a team(one of only a few) who have defeated them, but there is also so much extra attention placed upon games involving clubs from the same nation and this has been no different. The best teams cope with that, though, and City will have to do so if they are continue their quest for a first ever Champions League. Although on top domestically at the moment, they have nothing like the achievements of their opponents on Wednesday. That’s the main reason that Guardiola was brought to the club and whilst they have been impressive to date, they still have a lot to prove – starting this week.

Liverpool v Manchester City Betting Tip

Liverpool were well beaten when the sides back at the Etihad in September but they will point to Saido Mane’s sending off as the turning point in that game. They managed to exact revenge at the beginning of the year when edging out City 4-3 at home which sets these two games up perfectly. How the matches – especially the first leg – will be affected by the fact it’s a European game will be interesting to see but with both manager’s track records it’s likely that the two sides will go at it from the off and try and get an advantage heading into next week’s return.

Manchester City have proven much the best in England this year but that has been over the course of a season – Liverpool will feel that they can get the better of their opponents over 180 minutes. The Reds have drawn two of their four matches at home this season in the Champions League but travelling to Manchester for the second leg with the tie level would not be a terrible outcome. City will be looking to control the tempo of the game – as they so often do – but that is also likely to suit Liverpool who are more than happy to play on the counter with the devastating pace of Mane and Salah – both of whom were on the score sheet in January. Anfield will be rocking for this one and the more I weigh up the match-ups in this game, the more I’m inclined to fancy Liverpool to avoid defeat. Back Liverpool and the draw in the double chance market, meaning we’re on to a winner if the game ends in either of those outcomes.
