Sunday afternoon brings us undoubtedly the fixture of this Premier League weekend with Liverpool taking on Manchester City at Anfield with a valuable three points up for grabs for both teams.
Much has been made about Manchester City in the media so far this season, and deservedly so, but Liverpool also come into this clash in a rich vein of form as they’ve won four of their last five league matches with wins over Bournemouth, Swansea City, Leicester City and Burnley. The recent departure of Coutinho may take a little wins out of The Reds’ sails though.
Winger, Mo Salah, has undoubtedly been the signing of the summer as he’s banged in 17 goals so far in his first season in the English top flight, but The Reds will face very stiff competition in this afternoon’s showdown. Liverpool still remain unbeaten at home and their record stands at 6-5-0 21/4, but it’s interesting to note that they’ve won just once in their six matches against top six opposition overall, which also includes three draws.
Manchester City will be more than aware that their city rivals, United, take on a struggling Stoke City outfit at Old Trafford on Monday night, so they’ll be keen to avoid defeat here at Liverpool in order to avoid their 15 point lead being eroded away by dropping points.
City’s storming winning run came to an end away at Crystal Palace on New Years Eve, with Palace manager, Roy Hodgson, coming up with the blueprint that earned them a valuable point, and in turn, caused City to drop two. However, Manchester City still possess an excellent away record of 10-1-0 25/5, and they’ll take some stopping this afternoon.
This is just the third time that City will travel away to face a top six side, having already beaten Chelsea 1-0 and rivals, Manchester City 2-1, but I fancy a draw here today with Liverpool on home turf.
