Liverpool kept their winning run going during the week with a 3-2 win over PSG in their opening group match in the Champions League, and manager Jurgen Klopp is likely to stick with the same side this afternoon as they look to rack up another valuable three points ahead of their upcoming double-header with Chelsea.
The Reds take on Chelsea in the League Cup during the week before heading off to Stamford Bridge for next week’s important Premier League clash, so expect Liverpool to pull out all the stops here.
The attacking trio of Firmino (2 goals), Salah (2 goals) and Mane (4 goals) will be looking to add to their goal tallies against Saints.
Onto Southampton, and they and manager Mark Hughes will still be smarting from their 2-2 draw with south coast rivals Brighton last Monday night as Southampton had held a 2-goal lead over the Seagulls and seemingly had all three points in the bag.
Hughes in particular will be livid as he saw his side throw away two very valuable points and he’ll be desperately hoping this doesn’t come back to bite him later on in the campaign as the shadow of the sack continues to loom over his head.
Although Hughes steered Southampton to safety at the end of last season, the fact remains that The Saints have registered just three league wins from their last 17 matches, and indeed, just four from their last 30 overall.
The majority of these results were inherited by Hughes but with his side once again occupying a bottom half position in the top flight, another defeat here could see Southampton slip deeper towards the bottom three.
Saints have lost just once in their last five on their travels which includes wins at Swansea City (last season) and Crystal Palace, but they’ll be severely tested at Anfield here today I fancy.
