Preview: A repeat of their 3-2 victory in Madrid, when the sides met first time around in Group B, would seal a place in the last-sixteen with two games to spare for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who will be keen to avenge the 3-2 loss sustained at the hands of Atletico Madrid upon the Spanish side’s last visit to Merseyside.

Liverpool – Klopp’s Reds on cusp of Last-16?

At the fifth time of asking, six-time European champions Liverpool at long last got their first ever victory over Atletico Madrid in Spain on Matchday 3. It wasn’t easy, not that winning away to Diego Simeone’s sides ever is, but Mohamed Salah’s late penalty sealed all three points in a dramatic encounter at the Wanda Metropolitano. Now, the Reds go seeking a first win at Anfield over their opponents.

Jurgen Klopp, the German losing only two of his 22 Champions League home matches (W15 D5) since arriving on Merseyside in October 2015, has since seen his team win two of the next three in all competition. Chief among them a memorable 5-0 thrashing of arch rivals Manchester United. Unbeaten throughout 2021-22 thus far (W11 D4), they have scored at least twice in each of the last twelve fixtures.

Liverpool have stuttered recently at Anfield, however, losing two of their past seven here in this competition (W4 D1). Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brighton, meanwhile, made it three wins from six at home this season (D3), conceding on two occasions in three of the last four. This includes their 3-2 victory over AC Milan first time out in Group B, a section they hold a five point lead in having won all three match-ups to date.

Atletico Madrid – Further misery in England awaits?

The reigning La Liga champions had good reason to feel aggrieved, at least in their eyes, with how their 3-2 loss to Liverpool in Spain on Matchday 3 went down. A contentious VAR call overturning them a penalty late into the game, only moments after the English side were awarded one of their own. There could be little argument about the red card shown to Antoine Griezmann, though, although they did try.

Griezmann was the catalyst for the comeback at Wanda Metropolitano when the sides met earlier in the month, scoring both goals as Atletico valiantly fought back from a 2-0 deficit inside the opening 13 minutes. The Frenchman must now serve a suspension in this game, depriving his coach, Diego Simeone, of some badly needed guile as well as goal threat in England, where Atleti don’t retain the best of records.

Level on four points with FC Porto, the race for second looks like it could go down to the wire. Especially should Los Colchoneros prove unsuccessful in adding to their three victories in fifteen prior visits to these shores, beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the most recent of those. Four defeats across their previous eight away European contests (W3 D1) hardly augurs well for a positive outcome on Wednesday either.

Liverpool Vs Atletico Madrid Betting Advice

Over the years Atletico Madrid have proven a thorn in the side of Liverpool, remaining unbeaten across all four meetings prior to Matchday 3’s 3-2 loss in Spain. A similar outcome at Anfield – where they are yet to lose when including games that went into extra-time (W1 D1) – coupled with a win for FC Porto elsewhere and Simeone’s men would find themselves back in third in Group B, three points off the top two.

Liverpool Vs Atletico Madrid – Key Facts:

  • Victory in Madrid on Matchday 3 was Liverpool’s first against Atletico Madrid in five attempts (D2 L2 beforehand), though the Spanish side are unbeaten at Anfield (W1 D1).
  • Liverpool remain unbeaten across all competitions in 2021-22, winning 11 of 14; this compares favourably to their opponents (W7 D5 L2), Atletico winning just one of their last four (D2 L1).
  • Three of the past four visiting teams to Anfield scored exactly two goals, while three of Liverpool’s six home matches this season saw both teams score inside the first half.

Victory for Liverpool would see them through to the Last-16 with a couple of games to spare. Whether that incentive is enough to inspire a team which looked surprisingly leggy over the weekend, remains to be seen, but their form this season clearly trumps that of their opponents. Clean sheets at Anfield have been scarce, however, and so a repeat of their entertaining encounter on Matchday 3 shouldn’t be discounted.
