Preview: Two of the five most successful clubs in FA Cup history will decide who lifts the trophy at Wembley in 2022. The last three meetings between the sides have all ended in stalemate, though, meaning it could take something special to separate Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

Liverpool – Reds worthy favourites for second trophy of the season?

A first-half blitz in their heavyweight semi-final showdown with Man City paved the way for a 15th FA Cup appearance for Liverpool, who last featured at this stage in 2012. On that particular day they were beaten by the same opponent they face on Saturday. But, having secured a memorable shootout victory against Chelsea in this season’s EFL Cup, the Reds may well feel they hold the upper hand on this occasion.

If they can start with the same intensity which saw them blow Pep Guardiola’s men away, we could be looking at an eighth FA Cup success for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s side have found Chelsea a tough nut to crack, though, winning none of four prior meetings. Form-wise, however, there should only be one winner. Liverpool are unbeaten in 15 (W12 D3) in all competitions since a 1-0 scoreline at home to Inter Milan.

Key Stat: Having kept four clean sheets in a row, Liverpool have now conceded at least once in each of their past three matches – coming from behind to avoid losing in each of these games (W2 D1).

Chelsea – Blue desperate to avoid more final heartache?

An assured semi-final display against Crystal Palace has set Chelsea on course for their third FA Cup final in a row. It took them until midway into the second half to gain a foothold though. Eventually their class and persistence bore fruit, as goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount earned them a 2-0 victory and a shot at redemption against Liverpool, who beat them on penalties to lift the EFL Cup in February.

However, after falling agonisingly short in each of the last two finals of this competition, the Blues could become the first team to feature in three consecutive finals without getting their hands on the trophy. Their form leading up to the game hasn’t been ideal either. Wednesday’s 3-0 success away at struggling Leeds was their first win for four matches (D2 L1) and only a second clean sheet in six competitive outings.

Key Stat: No Chelsea player has scored more goals (3) in the FA Cup this season than Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian, who had a goal chalked off by VAR in February’s EFL Cup final loss to Liverpool, was also on target as the Blues recorded a 3-0 win away to Leeds in midweek.

Liverpool Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

To have lost Fabinho – the man tasked with protecting the back four by breaking up as many attacks as humanely possible – on the eve of this final is a huge blow for Liverpool. The Reds are still favourites on Saturday. However, Chelsea will feel they should have won the game in 90 minutes when the sides faced off in February’s EFL Cup final. Without Fabinho, the Blues should create chances freely once more.

Liverpool vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • The last three competitive meetings between Liverpool and Chelsea produced no winner in 90 minutes. Meanwhile, their EFL Cup final encounter in February saw Liverpool emerge victorious on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the end of extra-time.
  • Since losing 1-0 at home to Inter Milan in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, Liverpool have remained unbeaten in 15 matches (W12 D3). The Reds have won seven of the last eight.
  • Chelsea’s form has been a lot more suspect. The Blues secured only a second win in six last time out against Leeds, having been without a win for three games (D2 L1) beforehand.

That final was the first match-up between the two teams not to feature both teams scoring in three meetings. Liverpool have gone their last three matches without keeping a clean sheet, while Chelsea only managed two in their last six. At 8/11, Both Teams to Score should land. But it can be boosted to 15/4 should both oblige in front of goal and the contest end in a draw, which is how the last three H2Hs finished.
