Preview: The march towards a maiden Premier League title for Liverpool is taking a little while long than some were anticipating. Victory at Anfield would move them a step closer to their ultimate goal although an in-form Crystal Palace will have other ideas.

Liverpool Preview – Champions-elect ambling towards the title?

It does seem an awfully long time since the last truly convincing Liverpool (1st – W27 D2 L1) performance. Sunday’s dour 0-0 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby, failing to score for only the second occasion in the league all season at Goodison Park, was evidently not one. A first title remains a formality, with their lead an insurmountable 23 points over Man City in second, but the prospects of them achieving it in record-breaking style are not.

Jurgen Klopp’s men can still surpass 100 points this season, even after their recent goalless outing. However, any hopes of settling this title nice and early are dashed. Instead should Man City avoid defeat at home to Burnley 48 hours earlier, a win for Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday would set them up to clinch the crown this coming weekend at the home of the side who pipped them to top spot last season.

Liverpool have now failed to win on three instances in 2019/20 in the league – all away from Anfield, where their record remains flawless with fifteen straight victories. Of those, ten were despite conceding. So there may be some jittery moments against Palace, who scored three in last season’s corresponding fixture and have netted on seven of their previous eight visits to the home of the Reds in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace Preview – Hodgson’s team won’t be cowered at Anfield?

The Eagles climbed to within four points off fifth place after Saturday’s professional, and thoroughly deserved, victory at the Vitality Stadium, inflicting a 2-0 scoreline on hosts Bournemouth who were nullified throughout by a typically robust and well-organised Crystal Palace (9th – W11 D9 L10). That is what you get under Roy Hodgson, who has already met the club’s minimum requirement this season of avoiding relegation.

Everything else is now a bonus, and what an added extra qualifying for Europe would be. Anyone doubting their credentials, meanwhile, should look closely at their last set of results: four straight wins in the Premier League, all achieved without conceding a goal. Form as good as anyone right now, even if the teams who were beaten – Bournemouth, Brighton, Newcastle and Watford – all reside in the lower half of the table.

Furthermore, Anfield, while justifiably daunting for most, should hold no fear for them. Palace gave an excellent account of themselves on Merseyside last season, scoring three times and taking the early lead but still ending up on the wrong side of a 4-3 scoreline. Crucially, The Eagles remain the last visiting side in the Premier League to win at the home of Liverpool, achieving the feat under Sam Allardyce in April 2017.

Liverpool Vs Everton Betting Preview

Standards slipped at Liverpool long before the break came into effect, with a lot of their wins since the turn of the year either nervy or tinged with good fortune. Their performance in the Merseyside was more or less the same, and that should instill Crystal Palace, who are in excellent form anyway with four wins from their last four league games, with the belief they can cause more problems at Anfield.

Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace – Key Facts

  • None of the 15 teams who have so far visited Anfield in this season’s Premier League could prevent Liverpool from winning (W15).
  • Four successive victories without conceding in the Premier League for Crystal Palace, a club record.
  • Seven of the past eight seasons featured goals for both teams when these sides clashed at Anfield, with Liverpool edging a seven-goal thriller in 2018/19 to win 4-3.

No team has won at Anfield in the Premier League since Crystal Palace did so in 2017. In fact The Eagles love this ground, registering three wins and a couple one-goal margin defeats across their previous five visits. Ending Liverpool’s incredible unbeaten home run might be asking too much but a goal – something they have managed on seven of their last eight league visits – shouldn’t be.
