Preview: The top-four ‘final’ takes place at Anfield on Sunday. At least that is the view being taken by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of his side’s must-win clash on Merseyside with Crystal Palace, who will be keen to avoid a fourth successive league defeat at this ground.

Liverpool – Resurgent Reds closing in on Champions League football?

Jurgen Klopp described Wednesday’s vital 3-0 win at Turf Moor against a spirited Burnley side as his team’s ‘semi-final’. The final awaits on Sunday then, the reward not a trophy but a spot in next season’s Champions League. A prospect that seemed barely conceivable as recently as March, when Liverpool (W19 D9 L9) were down in eighth place, some seven points off the top-four after a run of six defeats in seven.

Now, the Reds come into the final day of the season back in fourth for the first time since the middle of February. Unbeaten in the league for nine games (W7 D2), last season’s Premier League champions have won four straight in the competition for the first time this season. They will be confident of making it five on Sunday, having beaten Crystal Palace on Merseyside in each of the past three seasons.

With a +4 goal difference on Leicester, who have as many points but a trickier assignment on paper at home to a Spurs side who must win to bolster their own European ambitions, Klopp’s men are firmly in the driving seat. Should the home side need a few goals, though, there could be a problem. Liverpool last scored more than twice at Anfield in a 4-0 win over Wolves in December.

Crystal Palace – Eagles firing but not seldom winning?

Roy Hodgson will take charge of his final match as Crystal Palace (W12 D8 L17) manager, at the ground where he endured a difficult seven-month spell in the Anfield dugout until his dismissal in 2011. The 73-year-old received a guard of honour for his final appearance at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, as Arsenal soured the mood with a 3-1 victory, and he can expect a warm reception when his team visits Merseyside.

Aside from bidding a fond farewell to a loyal servant over the last four years, there is enough on the line to ensure a committed performance is forthcoming. The Eagles can finish as high as 12th should they better the result of Wolves, or as low as 16th should they succumb to defeat at Anfield for the fourth season running and other results, involving Brighton, Newcastle and Southampton, not go in their favour.

Palace did win three in a row here between 2015 and 2017. So a positive result is not exactly beyond them. In Cristian Benteke they have a forward in form, with a goal in his last four appearances, while they have now fired in at least one goal in nine of their previous ten league games (W3 D1 L6). Although they haven’t beaten a team in the top-half of the table since catching Man Utd cold at Old Trafford in September.

Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace Betting Advice

It could be argued that both these teams were on the end of some unjust scorelines during the week. Liverpool were certainly flattered by their 3-0 win over Burnley, even if they did create a wealth of scoring opportunities to make it seven wins from their last nine league games, while Crystal Palace were very unfortunate to lose 3-1 at home to Arsenal. The latter’s fifth defeat in seven in the league.

Liverpool Vs Crystal Palace – Key Facts:

  • Crystal Palace won three consecutive Premier League away games versus Liverpool between 2015 and 2017, but have since lost the last three in a row here (4-0 in 2019/20).
  • Liverpool stretched their unbeaten league run to nine with a 3-0 victory away to Burnley in midweek, however, they only recorded four clean sheets during this spell.
  • Crystal Palace suffered their fifth defeat in seven league games when losing 3-1 at home to Arsenal on Wednesday, but have now scored in all but one of their last ten Premier League games.

Even if results haven’t always gone their way, Palace are certainly ending the season on the front foot. Five of their last seven matches featured three or more goals, scoring at least once in nine of the last ten including all of the past six away. That suggests they are capable of notching at Anfield, where Liverpool simply have to win but have conceded in 14 of 18 Premier League home games this season.
