Liverpool – Faltering Reds can get back on title path at fortress?

Unlike last season when for much of 2019/20 they were the ones looking down on everyone else, Liverpool (W9 D6 L2) have become the hunters after dropping to second following Manchester United’s victory in midweek. Beat the league leaders at Anfield on Sunday, though, and Jurgen Klopp’s faltering charges will be able to put an indifferent period under the German to bed, swiftly returning to the English summit.

The reigning Premier League champions come into this potentially season-defining fixture in rather mixed form to say the least, having recently thrashed a youthful Aston Villa in the FA Cup – their reward being a fourth round tie at Old Trafford – but with two points taken from the last three league outings (D2 L1). The latest a demoralising loss at St Mary’s to Southampton at the hands of former striker Danny Ings.

February 2017, the last time Liverpool went more than three league matches without a win under Klopp. On Sunday, however, they will have that fabled Anfield backdrop – albeit without a raucous support. It is also important to note that the Reds still boast the best home record in this season’s top-flight, dropping just two of 24 points (W7 D1) while netting two or more in all but the 1-1 stalemate with West Brom.

Manchester United – 11 unbeaten and primed for big Anfield display?

The celebrations that greeted the 1-0 victory at Turf Moor on Tuesday, as Paul Pogba’s deflected volley midway through the second-half settled a tight contest riddled in VAR controversy, spoke volumes about what it meant for these players. They believe they are in this title race, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stated this team will head to Anfield firmly of the belief that they can get something against the champions.

Were United (W11 D3 L3) to indeed get something, particularly a win, it would be a massive signal of intent from the 20-time Premier League winners. There is no reason why they cannot, either. The Red Devils are top of the table for a reason, just reward they will feel for putting together an 11-game unbeaten run, comprising nine victories, ever since losing at home to Arsenal at the beginning of November.

Solskjaer can also point to his side boasting the best away record in the division, the Boxing Day draw in Leicester the only blemish after amassing 22 out of a possible 24 points on the road. That despite conceding – and falling behind – in all of their first six away fixtures. They are now without defeat across their previous fifteen away matches (W12 D3) in the competition, since a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in January 2020.

Liverpool Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

The momentum has well and truly swung in Manchester United’s favour ahead of Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash at Anfield. United have won the last three league games, going eleven unbeaten in the competition in the process. But, crucially, hold a three point cushion over Liverpool, who are winless in their last three league outings and are currently without a Premier League goal in more than four hours of action.

Liverpool vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • The last time Liverpool went four league games without recording a win was February 2017; they have failed to win any of their past three top-flight fixtures (D2 L1).
  • No team has more points (22) or goals scored (21) from home matches in the Premier League than Liverpool, while United lead both categories (22 & 22) away from home.
  • Liverpool (W2 D5 L1) have lost one of their past eight Premier League meetings with Man Utd, who haven’t won a league fixture at Anfield since 2016, losing the last two.

Despite the host’s recent goalscoring troubles, this fixture pits two teams with the best home and away records against each other. Both averaging well in excess of two goals a game across their respective home and away matches. Meanwhile, neither have been reliable defensively: Liverpool conceding in six of eight at home and United not keeping an away clean sheet until their ninth said fixture of the season. So, for a fixture with a reputation for the underwhelming, Sunday could be the exception.
