London Irish suffered an away defeat at Bath last weekend, never really getting themselves into the match.

They will be taking on a Northampton Saints side who also suffered a loss last weekend.

The Saints went down heavily on home soil at Franklin’s Gardens against Wasps.

London Irish Preview – Can Irish stop the slump?

It is a three-match losing streak that London Irish are on in the Premiership at the moment.

Last weekend they were not really in the mix at all as they were beaten 34-17 by Bath at the Rec.

Will they find a bit of relief back on home soil? Well, they are playing their home games back at the Twickenham Stoop, sharing with Quins.

The last time that London Irish played a home game there was in 2000.

Back in Round 9 London Irish did pick up a win over Northampton, scoring a 20-16 success.

If they were to win this home game against them, it would be the first time in Premiership history that London Irish have done the season double over the Saints.

The Exiles are the current underdogs for this match in the outright at 11/8* (odds taken 04:47 GMT, Thursday 20th August).

 

The defence of London Irish has to be called out in this one as it has started to crumble.

In each of their last three league games, they have conceded at least 34 points.

They ended the last round of action in 9th placed with a W5 D1 L8 record.

London Irish boast the worst defensive record in the Premiership currently.

It has a tally of 384 points against them, which is an average of 27 points per game conceded.

That’s a heavy load and they are not offensively strong enough to offset that.

 

Northampton Saints Preview – Can Saints continue good away form

Northampton have claimed just the one win in their last six Premiership games.

So they haven’t exactly been running very hot either. The lone win in that sequence was against the struggling Worcester.

But, their away form is there, however.

It has been three wins by the Saints in their last four road games in all competitions.

They have also managed to bag three wins in their last four trips to the Twickenham Stoop as well.

Last weekend they were in their own backyard as they hosted the free-scoring Wasps.

Northampton were torn down at Franklin’s Gardens by the visitors in a 21-34 defeat.

They did put in a much better second half in that contest however, something perhaps to build on.

Northampton Saints won the one previous match played between themselves and London Irish at the Stoop.

That was a 44-20 back in January 2000 which isn’t of any relevance for this.

It has been four successes in their last five games against the Exiles that Northampton have taken.

Each of their last three wins over the Irish have been by a margin of at least eight points.

This is a tricky game to call with neither of these in particularly great league form.

But of course, this is only the second game back for both, so we can lean towards the away win.

We liked the way that Saints responded and rallied a little bit against Wasps last weekend.

 

 

They also have the head to head form going against London Irish, only having dropped one of the last five against them.

There are clear defensive issues there for the London Irish and we will back the Saints for the win.
