Lorient – Les Merlus to build on productive period?

February proved rather fruitful for the Breton-based club. Having endured a 15-game drought (D5 L10) in Ligue 1 from September through to January, Les Merlus have taken seven points out of a possible 12 from February’s fixtures. Last week’s success away to regional rivals Brest, then, was the culmination of some markedly improved form under Christophe Pelissier who has seen his charges forge clear of danger.

That danger is still present, however. Lorient remain within a couple points of the relegation places. Yet their recent form is such that they approach what would usually be a daunting encounter – they are still to register a win over Lyon in three attempts since returning to France’s top-flight for the 2020/21 term – with renewed belief and vigour. Though one win in their last nine (D4 L5) at Stade du Moustoir is concerning.

Key Stat: After succumbing 1-0 to Montpellier in their latest home assignment, Lorient have now failed to find the back of the net in four of the past six Ligue 1 home games.

Lyon – Les Gones well behind on expectations?

Missing out on Europe altogether last season hurt Lyon, who are essentially European heritage so synonymous are they with playing in UEFA competitions. To miss out in successive campaigns would be disastrous. Yet this is the stark reality dawning Jean-Michel Aulas, one of Ligue 1’s most vocal and passionate owners who certainly won’t be happy with what he is seeing out on the pitch in 2021-22 thus far.

After losing 1-0 to champions Lille last time, Lyon fell even further away from the top-five – now five points adrift of a place in Europe next term. A second defeat in four – the same total as in their eleven previous Ligue 1 fixtures – having won three on the spin versus Marseille, Saint-Etienne and Troyes beforehand. Winning once away from home since November (D3 L1) – a slender success at 17th-placed Troyes.

Key Stat: Lyon have only mustered a combined two goals in their past four Ligue 1 away matches, scoring multiple times in just two of 12 away league games in 2021-22.

Lorient Vs Lyon Betting Advice

Reputation seems to be a significant factor in why Lyon – who have won only once in the last four, one game on the road since the start of December, and are posting a worse points return on their travels than 15 of the 20 teams in Ligue 1 – begin as favourites away to Lorient. Particularly with Les Gones winning only one of seven visits (W1 D5 L1) in league and cup since 2011, held 1-1 in last season’s corresponding outing.

Lorient Vs Lyon – Key Facts:

  • After failing to win for 15-straight Ligue 1 matches, Lorient boast wins in two of their last four league outings – one more than Lyon managed across the same timeframe.
  • Some of Ligue 1’s top sides, including five of the current top-ten, have failed to win away to Lorient this term. Meanwhile only four sides have accrued fewer away points than the 13 from 12 games as Lyon.
  • There has been fewer than three goals scored in each of Lorient’s past six Ligue 1 home games and in all of Lyon’s last four away from home.

Morale should be healthy in the home camp as well, after a run of two wins in four. Moreover, with the likes of Lille, Monaco and Nice – sides currently higher in the table than Lyon – slumping to defeats at this venue already this term, and even PSG leaving frustrated following a 1-1 stalemate in December, there is little to suggest Lyon, with only three away wins all season, will fare any better at Stade du Moustoir.
